Advice on solutions for new slow performance with one large TM: maintenance or other methods?

Recently projects where I use my largest TM have become impossibly slow. I have to wait for seconds for Studio to catch up every time I type. The problem is specific to this large TM. I have done some some manual maintenance, removing useless segments, but I feel the need to work out some more effective batch delete tasks to save time. For instance, I was wondering if I could delete all "number only" segments. I suspect that might help. I do not have the TM set up with many filters (some, but they date back ages).

I'm using 12.0.4996.3 2015 Professional. The TM is fr-FR->en-US, 315 MB.

So, since I have been woefully lazy in maintaining my TMs over the years, where should I start? Perhaps first I should ask, am I missing anything? Are there any other reasons apart from size that a TM would cause Studio to slow down dramatically? I tried removing the Autosuggest dictionary from that same TM from projects to speed them up but that hasn't made a noticeable difference. If it is size, is there a TM size that I should consider as "too big"? Or does it depend on my system's processing power?

If maintaining it to make it smaller is indeed the way to go, can anyone suggest any filters that might work well, or effective clean-up methods?

Lots of questions, because I'm just trying what makes sense and realize I might be missing something.

Thank you for any help.

  • Hi Karen

    As you probably expect, there are many possible reasons why you experience this sluggishness. My first guess is that it probably is not the size of the TM. You did not say how many TUs it contains, but given the physical size you mentioned, I guess it contains around 250'000 to 300'000 TUs. This should not be a problem, even with file-based TMs. The question is more where this TM is stored. Is it on a network drive, a local drive , a standard hard disk drive (magnetic) or a SSD? This can make a huge difference in access times.

    Another important aspect: did you reindex your TM recently? This might also speed up things.

    Obviously the hardware of your PC also plays a role, mainly the RAM. How much RAM do you have? Experience tells that Studio runs best with at least 3 GB of RAM.

    Concerning the AutoSuggest dictionary, you can drop its usage without any loss and enable the new extended AutoSuggest functions available in Studio 2015. This will give you suggestions from the TM without the need to regularly generate an AutoSuggest dictionary.

    You mention that this slowdown appeared only recently. Is there anything that you can link with the appearance of this slowdown? Something you have changed in the configuration?

    If you really need to clean up the TM because the other suggested actions do not help, come back here, I'll be able to give you some advice on how to do this (I am an expert in TM cleaning[:D]).

    I have a TM with over 1,3 million segments, which does not make much trouble with my i7 based PC (3rd generation) and laptop (4th generation). Both times the TM is located on a SSD drive. Nonetheless, as the concordance searches in that very TM tend to be slow, I use project TMs instead.
    With TMs of the size you mention however, I usually work directly. No performance issues noticed so far, so the bottle neck will be your file system I suppose.
    In terms of smooth work with Studio some few parameters do play very big role. Most important is the HDD system. The faster it is, the better you can work. Also a good amount of RAM (in a 64 bit OS) helps a lot.

    As you mention, the slowdown has appeared recently: did you restart your PC or just hibernated it? Is there any pending Windows update in the background, which would require the PC restart, but the restart was not yet performed? If so, please restart your PC - in a similar situation my Studio became unworkable, I have had to wait for single letters to appear...
