Error message "Unexpected error when detecting the file type... Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1"

Question

Hi! 
 I work with Studio 2011 SP2R and I cannot open the sdlxliff files translated by a colleague, who also works with 2011 SP2R. When I try opening her files, I always get the same message: "Unexpected error when detecting the file type... Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1". 
 
 Any idea what the problem might be?

The file is most probably corrupt. Do you send them "open", meaning as *.sdlxliff via mail, or do you zip them prior to sending? 
If you don't zip, try to do so an check then. Otherwise your other sending way seems to cause problems. In this case open the file in Notepad++ and check, if the first line starts with: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> 
There may be NOTHING before the opening bracket.
