File icons disappeared

I recently uninstalled Studio 2011 because I no longer need it. However, when I now receive a Studio package (SDLPPX file) from my workgiver or when I create a return package (SDLRPX file), the file icon is blank as though the PC doesn't recognise the file. This is also the case for Studio projects (SDLPROJ files) and all other SDL files. It's only a mild irritation because Studio still opens the packages and projects with no problem. I'm just wondering why the file association would have suddenly disappeared. Thanks.

  • If you have had several instances of Studio installed and uninstalled one of those, please do now a repair installation (via Control Panel in Windows) to make sure the registry entries do match the current used version. This also should bring back the file associations (with the corresponding symbols).

  • Hi Jerzy,

    yes, I meant to try that. I tried to repair it from within the Studio application, but there didn't seem to be an option. I then went to Apps and Features in the Windows 10 settings, but it wouldn't let me 'Modify', only 'Uninstall'... After reading your post, I realised if you scroll down in the Windows 10 settings window, you can click a link that takes you to the more familiar Programs and Features window in Control Panel. When you click on Studio 2015 in this window it allows you to repair the program. Don't quite understand why 'Repair' isn't allowed in the Apps and Features window. Just another Windows 10 glitch I guess! Anyway, it's done the trick. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Yes, this is one the few "ununderstandable" features of Windows 10. Sometimes i really wonder why people are so prone to move existing features around to make us spend a lot to time searching them.

    Let me give you a hint that may be helpful: if you right-click on the START button, you get direct access to all the old categories you are used to from earlier Windows version such as "Programs and Features", "Control Panel", etc. No need to go through this new labyrinthic system.

  • Windows 10 makes it even more simple. Ask Cortana for "Control panel" and you're there.

  • Yes, that's true. I actually like Windows 10 so try to do everything through the new features. Unfortunately the "Settings" app leaves a lot to be desired over the good old Control Panel!

    @Walter, thanks for the tip!
  • Hi Jerzy

    May be nice but Cortana does not work yet in my country.

  • Once Control Panel is located, right click the icon on the Task Bar and "pin" it. This way you will have access to this old good feature still running the better Windows.
