Text field in Studio 2015? Display client name in the matches?

I came directly from Trados 2007 to Studio 2015 so this is quite a change ;-) ... In Trados 2007, I used the "Text field" to write the name of the client for each translation. So when the matches appeared, I also saw the name of the client I had used it for. Studio 2015 also displays this field when showing old matches but I can't find such a field to enter a client for a new translation. Is it possible?

What I found is under (in German) "Projekteinstellungen"/"Projekt", I could enter clients and I can now pick one when I work on a file. But what is this information for? Where does it appear? Can I tell Studio to display this information in the matches?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

When you create a field of type picklist and enter some values for the picklist in the Settings of your TM, you will then find these values under "Aktualisieren" in the "Project Settings" of your project (assuming you assigned this TM to the project), as you can see here:

I have defined the two fields Kunde (as a picklist) and Auftrags-Nummer (as a text field) in the TM and in the Project Settings, I can now select the values, as depicted here:

From the moment on that you made this choice, all the segments that you confirm in your Editor will be written to the TM with the value you chose (e.g. Aldi) in the field "Kunde".

And for the next project, you may change the value to another customer.

If you forgot to set the value when you strat your translation, you can still do it afterwards by running the batch task "Update main TM" and selecting the correct value at that time. This will then once more write all confirmed segments of your current document/project to the TM with the selected values.

Hope this helps a bit to understand. Good luck for your tests.

  • Dear Walter, this is all very mysterious to me... With the batch task, it didn't work. But then I tried again to go in Projekteinstellungen and don't-ask-me-where and I still had no list there, but I could enter a client name by writing it, and now for the first time, it appears in my new matches (this was about my 10th try ;-) !...). Of course, I don't know whether I can repeat this successful try ;-) ... Thanks very much for your help anyway! Best, Sophie
  • Hi Sophie, it sounds to me as though you have created a text field rather than a picklist? If not (and you do seem to have followed the steps) I wonder if you are somehow using a different TM to the one you think you are? Maybe a Project TM and not the Main TM you created with the picklists? There are a few new, but powerful concepts in Studio that often catch new users unaware.

If it helps we could do a quick Skype session to take a look at your set up? Might prevent more hours of not knowing why it won't behave as you wish.

    Regards

  • Thank you Paul, this is very kind of you. Yes, maybe I created a Text Field instead of a Picklist... I think I can try a bit by myself and come back to you if I still don't manage. (I think I cannot be using the wrong TM because I am completely new to Studio 2015 (since january), so I created only one TM and imported my very own main TM from Trados 2007 in it. That's the only one I have been using since january.) Best, Sophie
  • ok - I hope you manage to sort it out.  You might find this article useful too as it explains how it is possible to create a different TM depending on how you set your project up... happens automatically and you may not have even noticed.  Might be an interesting concept to know about anyway :-)
