Error when opening package with Merged HTML 5 files

I received a project from client with XHTML files (File setting used HTML5 - no changes to the entities). When preparing the Studio project (Studio 2014 SP2), I merged the files together, so the linguist would be able to see the files in their proper order (and not have to open many individual files). When they open the 'merged' file, they get errors "An unexpected error occurred while activating the document view." and also "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". The document WILL open, but they then get a message "Check out required. To modify this document you must check it out."

I'm unable to duplicate the error on my machine. They are using Studio 2014 SP2 Professional and Studio 2014 SP2 Freelance.

I also had this happen with another language and they had to upgrade to Studio 2015 to get the project to work, but they continued to get object reference errors during the entire project. So, out of 10 languages, 2 are having difficulties. Does anyone have any suggestions that I might try? I am unable to export the settings file (I presume it is the default so cannot be exported).
