Urgent Issue with .SVG files "Cannot find Copy of XML 1.2.0.0"

I have recently come across an unexpected issue with .ditamap files. I am a Project Manager.  I receive .ditamap packages from a client for almost two years and up until now I have had no issues.

 The packages typically include:

.dita

.svg

.dtd

I basically throw everything into Trados, delete any untranslatable files, merge and package. On a recent project we were able to process the initial package without any problems however with this client there are many stages, Pre In Country Review, In Country Review, Linguistic QA.

Typically anything post TRED, the linguists just deliver XLIFFs and I save target as. Recently when I tried to save target as from XLIFFs from a Pre ICR check I received the following error, “Cannot find file type definition with id Copy of XML 1.2.0.0” and I couldn’t save the target files. I asked the linguist to try to send a package from the Pre ICR check instead of XLIFFs, I reimported the package but when I tried to re generate the target translations based on this new package I received the following error, “Filter Definition “Copy of XML V 1.2.0.0 not found or could not be used to construct a generator”. I am attaching both error screens.

In one of these projects we had done a previous Tier where I didn’t have any issues, so I compared the difference in source files and realized the problem batch had .svg files whereas the good batch does not. As an experiment I put together a project with the .svg files from the problem project and received the same errors after I pre-translated and tried to generate target files. We have successfully processed .svg files in the past though so I am really at a loss. Any ideas?

  • Hello Pedro,

Typically this message appears when you attempt to open an sdlxliff for translation and you don't have a matching filetype.  So if you received a package in Studio 2011 and get this message it's normally because the package came from a more recent version of Studio and 2011 cannot handle the filetype.  You can still translate the file, you can still create a return package, but you won't be able to save target or preview as well as a few other things and this is because Studio 2011 doesn't know how to put the file back together again.

If you are just sent the sdlxliff and you get this message, and believe you have the filetype, make sure it's in your Tools -> Options -> Filetypes and not just Project Settings.  This is because when you just handle the sdlxliff outside of a project it will be using the default settings and not project settings where you may have had this filetype before.

I can tell you that the default XML is the one you mention, but not with SVG, also the fact it says Copy is because someone created a copy and changed the settings.  If they do this all the time and don't bother to edit the identifier (I see this a lot) then you can end up with multiple different custom XML filetypes all with exactly the same identifier.

Maybe a few things to check out there?

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, thanks. In our project settings we have "Copy of XML V.1.2.0.0" as the file identifier for SVG files however in our general settings (tools/options) we simply have "SVG" as the file type identifier for SVG files. How can we get these to match?
  • I guess you could export the filetype from your Project settings, and then import it into your General options? Or create a new project template, import this filetype into it and then use that template to review these sdlxliff files.

  • Hi Paul, it appears to have worked! I have no have two settings under my General options for SVG. One with SVG as an identifier and one with "Copy of XML V.1.2.0.0." all appears to be in order now. Thank you!
