Studio 2015 and xliff files - formatting of fonts is grayed out. Trados support says this is on purpose. Has anyone found a way around it?

Adding custom formatting (like italic, bold, etc) to a xliff file in Studio 2015 is not allowed. It makes it impossible to italicize foreign words, etc. This is a major drawback. Any suggestions or solutions will be appreciated.

    TBH I do not see any drawbacks here. A CAT tool is designed to bring the meaning of the source into the target. The target formatting has to be identical with the source, changes in formatting are not really a part of translators work.
    Imagine your customer spends quite a time to develop a catalogue, where not only text, but also picture and - what is even more important for us - the typeface do matter much. But the translator just means the typeface has to be changed - what would the customer say?
    If you indeed need to format insertions (are they necessary and accepted by the customer?), use a simple workaround - place a @ before and after the text part, which needs formatting and apply (or let the formatting be applied) in the final document.
    Formatting text in CAT is really not a good idea.
