Feature suggestion: Option for user to run de-duplication over a TM

There currently seems to be no easy way of removing duplicates i.e. items in the TM where the same Source is matched with the same Target more than once. This can, over time, make the suggestion pane quite unwieldy and you end up manually deleting items from the suggestion pane, which is not efficient.

  • Hi Michael,

The last time this problem occurred on a large scale was a few versions ago but back then I found a workaround.

Export the whole memory to tmx.
Create a new memory based on the old memory so you don't lose any custom settings.
Without changing any import settings, import the tmx into that memory.
The incoming segments used to overwrite their own duplicates.

I'm not sure how the new memory import settings changes of more recent versions would affect this as the default has changed.
It's something I've been intending to experiment with but have been working flat out for so long I just haven't had the time.

Has anyone else worked on this?

    All the best,
    Ali
  • Hi Alison,
Thanks. Perhaps I should have mentioned that I am aware of a couple of workarounds - but I strongly feel that for the sake of TM management, this needs to be less convoluted i.e. an inbuilt feature via a menu item.
  • Hi Michael,

There's always the SDL Translation Memory Management Utility.
    www.translationzone.com/.../sdltranslationmemorymanagementutility-804.html

That's been around a long time. I used to use it when it first came out but I just preferred my method. It looks as if it does more now than back then...

    The SDL Translation Memory Management utility is a powerful and compact utility for administering file based SDL Trados Studio translation memories. It allows users to perform a variety of administrative and supply chain tasks for file-based Translation Memory files (*.sdltm);

    - Export of SDL Trados Studio Translation Memories to Trados 2007 format
    - Removal of duplicate entries in SDL Trados Studio Translation Memories
    - Revert index in SDL Trados Studio Translation Memories (reverse language pairs)

Once installed, you will now find SDL Translation Management Utility in your programs (by using the Windows search Programs and Files function). It will then open up as a stand alone app outside of SDL Trados Studio.

I imagine you know about that as well, and what you're hoping for is an incorporated 'remove duplicates' tab with a few settings to use in the TM window...

I've found that it refreshes the TM's stability to be exported and imported into a new memory now and then.

    All the best,
    Ali :)
