Unable to open the database file

Hello,

I'm a SDL Trados Studio 2015 SR2 user. When I try to open package, I get an error message "The translation memory data file engine returned an error: Unable to open the database file" with Origin "Import Project Package". I tried below two solutions suggested in this community for related issues, but not successful;

1) delete all data in “C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio4\PlugIns” and run Studio repair

2) ask the sending person to zip the file(s) before sending and attach the ZIP to the email

The package is from my agent who uses SDL Trados Studio 2014. They can open the same package within their team. I also noticed that in my Review Package Contents window, I cannot see the browse button to select the folder to save. (Actually I could open package for another similar package from the same agent, and this is the second package to open. That means the folder for the second package may not be empty, but I have no idea how to show the browse button...)

Thank you so much for your help in advance!

Emi

  • Hi Emi,

    I'm sure it's just me... but I'm struggling to know how best to answer this one. Can you elaborate a little with the full file name for the package, what you expect to find in the package? Can you share the package you are trying to answer?

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you so much for your reply. Here's some more information;

    The full file name for the package*: <再々送>【x様_0425納品分】xxxxxxx様_xxx様用 研修資料(メモリ更新版).sdlppx
    File type: SDL Trados Studio Project Package (.sdlppx)
    Package content: 7 MS word files

    *Here, I replaced the specific names with "x" due to the confidentiality agreement. It's Japanese kanji (chinese characters).

    The full file name of the first package from my agent which I was able to open is;
    【x様_0413納品分】xxxxxxx様_xxx様用 研修資料(メモリ更新版).sdlppx

    I did not pay attention so I'm not so sure, but there might have been the browse button to select the folder to save in "Review Package Contents" window for the first package. But I cannot see the browse button now...

    And I'm so sorry but I cannot share the package due to the confidentiality agreement with the client, but I hope the above information is helpful.

    I really appreciate for your help.

    Best regards,
    Emi
  • Hi Paul,

    I have an update. My agent sent me another package with the same content (7 word files), but with the different project name and different package name. And I could open this package. (and the browse button to select the folder to save in "Review Package Contents" window was there this time!)

    Actually they sent me 2 packages under the same project name, and I could open the 1st package without any problem. For the 2nd package, which has a different package name but the same project name as the 1st one, I got the error message as in my subject. And for this 2nd package, I don't see the browse button to select the folder to save in "Review Package Contents" window. (I suppose this is due to the same project name, and Trados Studio tries to use the same folder for the same project even if it's not empty. And the browse button to change the folder is not there.)

    So I might have to change the subject from "Unable to open the database file" to "Unable to see the browse button to select the folder to save a package in "Review Package Contents" window.

    Sorry for my poor explanation but hope my issue could be solved with this message.

    Best regards,
    Emi
  • Hi Emi,

    Can you try renaming the package you have problems with as test.sdlppx.  It may be that there are characters in that long name which Studio doesn't like and I have seen a similar error message for a different problem and it was caused by this.

    So renaming the package with a simple name would be a good test for this one.

    Thanks

    Paul

    Hi Emi,

    Can you zip up the original project (so it's not lost), then delete the original and also remove it from the Studio view, then try and open the package.  Worth checking to see if having an existing project is the cause of this problem.

  • Hi Paul,

    Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

    I tried with remaned package as test.sdlppx, but got the same error message. I will try your next suggestion as below later (probably next week after I'm done with the 1st package). I'll report to you and this community as soon as I try it. Thanks for your precious time and advice!

    Best regards,
    Emi
