I keep getting the following error message when I copy/cut text in SDL Trados Studio Freelance 2014. I'm losing a LOT of time because of this… Is there any way to solve this problem?

Here is the error log:

Thank you for your reply. I just tried that and I still get the error message when copying/cutting. I've tried to repair the installation from Windows as well but still no luck. I've just downloaded the latest installation package and I'll try to reinstall it now.

  • Hi Matthieu,
There are others having issues with Windows 10 clipboard not working:

    forums.windowscentral.com/.../372782-why-cant-i-copy-paste-windows-10-allows-me-copy-but-will-not-paste.html

I haven't time to read it right through but it would seem that you're not alone...
    All the best,
    Ali
  • Thanks for that Ali, I was just searching myself but didn't come across this one. Many of them point to driver problems, but some refer to third party copy/paste apps that are sometimes installed with a computer and these can also clash with W10. Interestingly some of the posts are also about copy paste to browsers. Fine to other apps, but not to browsers.

I do think some investigation is warranted to other sources of the issue and not just Studio.

Thanks for your replies, and thanks Ali for your new input, I will check this out when I have more time.
I'll try and answer everything that has been asked/said:

    1. Did you adapt any shortcuts for that?
    No

    2. The problem is not caused by Studio - or if it is, there is something else in your setup, not present on other machines, causing that problem in conjunction with Studio.

Probably but then again there is nothing particular about my setup, especially since the problem appeared when I had nothing but office and trados and perhaps ESET Smart Security.

    3. It's easy to blame us, but if we can't reproduce it how are we supposed to fix it? No amount of posting in here and blaming us is going to help.

It actuallty did. You did not reply my last email, and the only times you reply here is when I blame SDL...

    4. Possibly the only way we'll get to the bottom of it is to have a developer work on your machine with you and see what's causing the problem.

SDL Support spent more than an hour on my PC and found nothing.

    5. Maybe you can share the contents of your task manager in a screenshot as you are working with this problem occurring? Also, what apps for Studio are you running at the same time?

It's been almost 3 weeks since we last exchanged emails and the contents of my task manager probably changed a lot since then. Besides I reinstalled Windows 10 like 10 times over the last few weeks. I've been late on several projects because of this. Finally, the bug appears less often and is harder to reproduce now. Plus I remind you that SDL support spent more than one hour on my PC, don"t you communicate at SDL?

    6. Possibly the only way we'll get to the bottom of it is to have a developer work on your machine with you and see what's causing the problem (...) So how about this. I'll see if I can arrange it and if the problem is with our software there will be no cost, but if your problem is the result of something on your machine then we bill you for the time expended?

Let me guess, software compatibility issue will be considered as my fault, when all other software work perfectly whatever the setup. Thanks, but I've wasted enough time and money on this matter.

Got to go now, thank you allfor your help, I will manage somehow...
  • Hi again Matthieu,

The error 'Échec de l'opération du Presse-papiers demandée' suggests this is a clipboard malfunction of course so, to test whether this is being caused by the current Windows 10 clipboard itself, you could try adding an older version of Windows clipboard or a different piece of clipboard software...

    www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-clipboard-manager-viewer

I understand how frustrating this must be for you but the experts who have been trying to help you would have found the solution by now if it was only Studio causing the problem. This is why I'm trying to think laterally and investigate the actual software that is not functioning properly - the clipboard.

One other thing: ESET Smart Security...have you added the Studio application to its exceptions list? It should be added.

If one of my 3 suggestions leads you to a solution, it would be good if you could let us know so that if this happens again, we can help others more effectively.

    Bon courage,
    Ali

Hi Ali, Thanks again for your help.

I checked out the first link you provided, but in my case I have no problem to paste text. The error message only appears when copying/cutting but it may be related too.
One thing I forgot to remind is that the problem appeared out of the blue, not after a new installation or a new configuration. My point is that it may well be a compatibility/configuration issue, but it's not like I installed a new specific program which caused Studio to malfunction. And if it was a driver problem, then it would be an optimization issue on SDL part.
As far I as remember, I tried disabling completely ESET Smart Security with no luck, and so did the SDL support I think. But I will try this out when the problem appears again.
However, I will definitely try to replace the current Windows 10 clipboard when I encounter the problem again, it will be a good way to rule out the Win 10 clipboard.

Finally, most of you suggest that since I am the only one with this problem, it is necessarily from my setup. Even though this is a safe assumption, it is not true for sure. Let's take Jerzy's example:

"I have exactly the same situation here - Windows 10, O365, freshly installed Studio 2015 and never ever have encountered ANY problems with Cut&Paste."

I never did either before I started working with files on which I heavily use copy/cut functions. I now have to handle files with hundreds of segments. I have to copy/cut a reference number every 2-3 segments (which is a whole segment) which I past in Firefox. And then I do several copy/cut & paste per segment within Studio since this is post-editing and I have to place words in the right order.
Can you say you do copy/cut text every 15 seconds like I do ? What I am saying is that you might have the same issue and simply not know it because you've never triggered it.
If you think this is far fetched, I suggest you check out the "Skylake bug" matter which is a good example of how specific usage can trigger bugs/crashes (even though it is not directly related).

Anyway, on my new setup the problem seems to be rare and much harder to reproduce, but when the problem appears again, I will try your solutions Ali.

On the other hand, I will get my hands on another PC in a week or so. This way, I will be able to do all the testing I need without tampering with my current work station.

Thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it even if I'm still a bit angry ^^ And of course, if I manage to isolate/solve the problem, I will post in this thread.
  • I don't copy & paste as often. Nonetheless, when you paste to Firefox, pelase consider using WebLookup - this does the same, but you don't have to copy&paste, just selecting and sending to WebLookup does the trick.

Hi Jerzy, thank you for your suggestion. I did note it yesterday but this only solves half of the problem since it remains for copying/cutting & pasting text within Trados.
But it will come handy when the problem returns and beyond that, it seems to be a very useful & time saving app. As a matter of fact, I'm finishing the small project I'm currently working on and I'll install the addon afterwards.

Edit: as regards the reference numbers I copy in Firefox, I have to use Firefox or another web browser because I have to paste the number at the end of a URL to display a product page, I'm not sure I can do that with Web Look Up, but still I will use it for my searches.

  • Hi Matthieu,

While I haven't experienced your problem, I'd be curious to learn what's causing it. I think it would be interesting if you could share with us the steps you're following so we can test and see if others here can reproduce the issue. You've mentioned that you use Firefox, does this also happen with other browsers? I remember reading about copy/pasting issues related to Firefox, although I couldn't tell you what they are specifically.

    Hi Nora,
The problem happens when I copy/cut text within Trados as well. It is quite random. I can work days without the error showing up and the next session, I will not be able to copy/cut a single word without having the error message.
Cutting text seems to trigger the problem more often that copying. At least it was very obvious when the SDL Support remotely took control over my PC and asked me to reproduce the bug. Now that I have a completely new machine, the problem is much rarer and harder to reproduce.
I am about to start a post-editing project that will most likely trigger the problem again, I will post any developments here.
I am talking about post-editing files because they require heavy use of copy/cut, but it happens whatever the file type (we've tested several file types with the SDL support).
  • Hi again Matthieu,

Sorry to read that the first link I sent you was not helpful, I thought that as so many were presenting different problems with Windows 10 clipboard all down the page, one of the conversations might trigger an idea that helps you find a solution.

I didn't ask if you disabled ESET, that would be risky as you have to cut and paste so often. I asked if you have added the Studio application to the ESET exceptions list? It and any other heavy-duty 3rd party software should be added to the ESET exceptions list as a matter of course.

I copy and paste from Studio quite often but not every 15 seconds. As you say, the frequency could cause some sort of failure in clipboard. That sounds likely, actually. I remember MS Word years ago would not cope with too much copy/cut and pasting. It would freeze. That could be down to Windows itself not coping rather than any software, or to limited RAM. I know nothing about the background stuff.

Sorry for all the 'silly questions' but sometimes asking them can trigger solutions...

If you look at these links:
    forum.openelement.com/.../forum_posts.asp
    forum.gregland.net/viewtopic.php
    steamcommunity.com/.../
    bugs.mysql.com/bug.php

Search 'Échec de l'opération du Presse-papiers demandée' on each of these pages and you'll see it is a Windows error that is being triggered by 3rd party software of various different types.

Likewise I searched for for 'Requested Clipboard operation did not succeed' and found many different online queries involving a variety of different software. The suggested solutions were also varied.

One suggestion was to end the clipboard executable in Task Manager to clear the clipboard but that is long-winded. The following might be useful if your problem is simply caused by overloading the Windows clipboard:

    www.tenforums.com/.../4326-clear-clipboard-shortcut-create-windows-10-a.html

A long shot, I know but it's worth trying when you have the time!
    All the best,
    Ali

    Hi again Ali,

No worries, all input is good :)

About ESET, I know you were refering to the exceptions list but I deemed the fastest way to rule out ESET was to deactivate it temporarily. ESET has a specific function for that. Plus I've been using ESET without any problem for years and I didn't update it when the problem occurred (well only the virus base updates itself on a daily basis).

The problem often appears after a quick shortcut combination like CTRL+X then ALT+TAB but if I recall well, it also happened on single copying operations within Trados.
Windows 10 64 bits is pretty fast and reactive (I think), therefore I doubt it can't cope a few copy/cut operations. I have a i5 6600k + 8 Gb of RAM + SSD and with Studio 2015 opened, several Word windows opened, the PDF reader opened, several Firefox windows opened with multiple tabs opened in each window, and ESET running, here are the usage values I reach (when translating in Trados and not doing any other tasks in Trados):
    1-6% of the CPU
    36% of the RAM
    0-2% of the SSD
As you can see, my system is barely used.

I tried several times clearing the clipboard with CCleaner but next time I'll try to do it manually, as you said, it's worth trying.

Otherwise, I checked out the links you provided most of these problems seem to come from the application itself and not windows (and low RAM in one case). But like when I searched for the error message, there's never a solution.

Anyway, you already provided a couple of interesting suggestions I need to try next time the problem appears. I will keep you all posted if the situation evolves in any way. Thanks again for all your help.
