I keep getting the following error message when I copy/cut text in SDL Trados Studio Freelance 2014. I'm losing a LOT of time because of this… Is there any way to solve this problem?

Here is the error log:

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: I have the error message when copying/cutting text with shortcuts AND with the mouse.

Hi Alexander, thank you for your reply. I don't use Punto Switcher however I sometimes use the Windows Language Preferences icon that appears in the task bar to switch keyboard layout. The only program I can think of that accesses the clipboard is ccleaner. I'm currently using the trial version of Studio 2015 and I haven't encountered the error message yet, but I'll try and uninstall ccleaner if I get the error message again.

I don't think that CCleaner is the culprit. I use CCleaner and never had any problem with the clipboard. I also don't see why CCleaner should mess around with the clipboard, it's not part of the tasks of this utility.

Hi Walter. Thanks for your reply, I've been using CCleaner for years as well and never had any problems either. And CCleaner does erase the clipboard when you run the cleaning tool so dealing with the clipboard is part of its functions.
Anyway after everything I tried, I am now pretty sure the culprit is Trados itself (the problem happens even when Trados is installed on a fresh Windows 10 installation). It is the only program I'm having problems with whereas I am running many other programs, some of which are much more demanding BTW.
I believe it may be a compatibility issue with my hardware, but then again it is the only program that fails when I try to copy/cut text, it is not my fault if it is not properly designed ! Hence my conclusion: SDL Trados Studio is the culprit.
So, to sum it up, I paid for Studio 2014 but it is now useless/counter-productive.
I was granted a 12-month trial for 2015 and I get the same error messages, so useless as well.
The SDL person I was in contact with hasn't replied my last message (that was more than 15 days ago).
I've lost all hope that SDL will actually try and help me, I am now focusing on trying to find a new TAO tool.

Update: this is definitely not a hardware compatibility issue as I moved from a Haswell build to a Skylake build (new motherboard, new CPU, new SSD, new RAM, new GPU...) and I am still getting the error messages, even with Studio 2015. It happens less often but the problem remains anyway, and I still feel like I wasted my money as SDL simply ignores the problem.
  • This is also definitely NOT a SDL problem. There must be another software running on your PC, which does interfere with the clipboard operations. Please check all programs, which could use clipboard - like dictating software or similar. The culprit will be there, not in Studio.
BTW, did you reset your user profile in Studio and maybe renamed the folder SDL Trados Studio, which you can find in your user account in AppData, Roaming settings?
The error message points to an external operation.

Another software... yes, Windows 10 Pro. As I said in my previous posts, I tried on a clean install (with only firefox and office 365) and the problem remains. The problem definitely is from the program, it seems to appear when I use Alt Tab and copying/cutting too quickly.
And of course the message points to an external operation, it happens mostly when I try to copy/cut stuff from trados and paste it in Firefox or else... You can defend SDL all you want the fact is that this is the only "pro" software that is not working properly, period.

And to answer your question, yes I tried countless times resetting user settings, trados layout... And so did the SDL support and it did not resolve anything...
  • I have exactly the same situation here - Windows 10, O365, freshly installed Studio 2015 and never ever have encountered ANY problems with Cut&Paste. Did you adapt any shortcuts for that? When you use ALT+Tab, you are switching applications in Windows.
BTW, if you are using copy&paste for web searching, why not use the Web Lookup tool from open exchange? This would save you dozens of copy&paste operations.
In fact I do not really defend SDL. But from what I can tell, you are the only one person with this problem. Nothing similar has been reported on any known list, so this really seems to be a problem with your particular configuration. Keyboard driver, modifications of shortcuts and many more operations by the user may be the cause. But I am quite certain the problem is not caused by Studio - or if it is, there is something else in your setup, not present on other machines, causing that problem in conjunction with Studio.

  • Nobody is ignoring you Matthieu. To be honest we have no idea what to try next, Your problem is not something we see repeating itself across the userbase and it's intermittent. We gave you a 12-month Pro license which seemed to help for a little while, but the fact it helped for a while and then stopped points to something specific in your environment that is clashing with our software.

It's easy to blame us, but if we can't reproduce it how are we supposed to fix it? No amount of posting in here and blaming us is going to help. Possibly the only way we'll get to the bottom of it is to have a developer work on your machine with you and see what's causing the problem. I can try and arrange this if you like, but taking someone off productive work to investigate this one-off problem is going to come with a cost to someone.

So how about this. I'll see if I can arrange it and if the problem is with our software there will be no cost, but if your problem is the result of something on your machine then we bill you for the time expended?

  • In the meantime I have had a developer go over your error stack again and the response is the same:

The reason this can crash is because the clipboard is shared by all apps that run in windows and if some other application uses the clipboard in the same time then you get this error. It would be good to understand exactly what exactly the user does in Studio and if he uses some other applications in the same time with Studio that might use the clipboard. For example:
    1. If he uses a laptop does he stop it and the end of each day or just put it to sleep
    2. What apps run in parallel when the crash happens?
    3. What type of content is he trying to copy and paste – if this is the action he is doing, but from the exception this is what it seems

Maybe you can share the contents of your task manager in a screenshot as you are working with this problem occurring? Also, what apps for Studio are you running at the same time?
