Your assumption that the error will come up again if you create a new project may be wrong in this particular situation because the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" is a generic error message that can appear in very different situations and does in itself not give any clue as to what really caused the error.

It may also disappear simply after having done a "Reset Window Layout" or after having restarted Studio, so I suggest that these are the first things you should try.

If you still get the error, I suggest you check whether the source file has been properly converted by opening it in Studio and before you start translating, doing a preview (all target segments still being empty). If you already get an error, this means that Studio will not be able to convert this file and you should report this to SDL.  You can also find more details about this procedure in the following KB article.

Thank your for the files.

I also could not open the files, getting the following error:

The stacktrace indicated that Studio crashed while parsing an element called "CommenMetaData", so I opened your files in an Editor and saw that there were a lot of comments at the beginning of the SDLXLIFF. 

I don't know if they were already present in the files you received or if you added them yourself (their date is April 18). 

So, I deleted the entire comment group, saved the SDLXLIFF file again and tried to open it in Studio and it worked. 

The new files open fine in Studio and you can also save the target MQXLIFF. However, as I don't know what the purpose of these comments was, I can't guarantee that there is not something missing in the  document. You may have to check with your client.

Hi Walter,

That's great news, thanks a lot. I replaced my xliff files with your corrected files in the relevant folder, but when I try to open them I get an error message, see below. Should I open them in another way?

You are right, I am so sorry.  I must have clicked on the wrong file name when saving.

This ZIP should now contain both files.
