Excluding locked segments from the "Not Translated" character count in [Editor]

I would like to exclude locked segments from the "Not Translated" character count at the bottom of the [Editor] window, so that I know how much work I have left to do. How do I do this?

  • Hi David,

This isn't possible. You can exclude from the analysis as you probably know (depending on your Studio version) but not from the count in the toolbar. Does seem like an obvious enhancement though.

Perhaps the solution is to select all the locked segments and then set the status to "translated". This way your stats will more accurately reflect your work as you would prefer.

  • Thanks Paul. How do I submit this as a suggestion for the next iteration?
  • You just have!

  • Hi Paul,

I'd like to strongly second David's suggestion. I am translating a file with a lot of segments that need to remain in the source language, and have locked those segments.

You proposed changing the status of the locked segments to "translated." That enters the segments in my TM, though, right? If that's true, it junks up my TM with "nontranslations" I will either never use or that will be offered to me as useless or worse than useless suggestions when I have a similar segments in the future that I actually do need to translate.

You also mention that you can exclude locked segments from the analysis. Are you talking about the analysis in the Reports section that is generated when the file is imported and that gives you a breakdown into perfect matches, etc.? If so, that is unfortunately also no help, as I need to know how much I have currently completed, and not how much was already in my TM when I started the translation. If there's a report on the current state of translation that allows me to exclude locked segments, I would love to know where to find it.

    Thanks,

    Patricia

Wrong.  Although if you use the confirm command to do this then of course it will.  But if you just select all these segments and right-click change the status without any update command then all you do is ensure that they are considered when counting the work that is left to do.  Or maybe use the sdlxliff toolkit for example, as this would let you change the status of them all in one go more easily.

I was... but the same applies to the WIP report which is probably what you're after:

Give that a try and see if it'll deliver what you wanted.  There are quite a lot of options in there, including how to handle locked segments, and this may save you a lot of messing around.
