How to store back a translated file in .xlf format

Hallo,

I am using SDL Studio 2015 SR2. 

I need to translate an .xlf format file. SDL Studio is able to read in the .xlf file correctly and the translation also proceeds well.

However, I can only store back the translated file as .xliff file and not as .xlf file.

Question: How can I store back the translated file as .xlf file please?

Ans suggestion or tip would be most welcome.

    Why is that Shyam? If you save target then the extension of the saved target should be the same as the one you fed in.

    Hi Paul,
    Thanks for the quick response. Yes, you are right, it does store it back as .xlf file. I got confused because I wanted to change the file name (not the extension) to differentiate it from the original source file. So I used the option 'save as' and in this case I could change the name of the file but the only extension SDL Studio offers is .sdltb and not a choice between .sdltb and xlf. That confused me. Now I am just saving the file (not using "save as") it works well because SDL Studio adds suffixes by itself and that is sufficient for me to differentiate. I get a file with .xlf extension.

    That answers my question.

    Excellent...

    SaveAs supports you saving a copy of the Studio bilingual format as a new file. This is still SDLXLIFF. This is different to Save Target which is the translated version of the source file.

    Hi Paul,

    I am afraid I must nag you and have to ask something about the files with .xlf or .xliff extensions.

    From what you told me in your reply (see above),  about  .xlf file - when a target file is stored using just "save" command in Studio 2015, and not "save as",  it will have the same ending as the source file had.

    That means a "source.xml"  file after simple save" should be "target.xml".

    Please consider the source file directory entry:

    Here the source file type is .xml. Looking now at the target file directory entry:

    one sees that the translated file stored (with simple "save") has an SDLXliff file format.

    This would mean that technically ".xml" and "sdl xliff"  are same!!

    And that a customer demanding translated ".xml" file back for a submitted source ".xml" file, could be safely given a SDL xliff file.

    Is this understanding correct?

    Let me clarify this.

    The "Save" and "Save as" commands don't save the target file, they save the bilingual SDLXLIFF file (Save) or a copy of it (Save as). The file extension will be .SDLXLIFF.

    Only the "Save as target" command does save the target with the same extension as the source file (.DOC, .XML, etc.)

    "Save as" and "Save as target" are two different commands!

    Walter has hit the nail at the head.
    But the best way to get the final files is to use the batch task "Finalize" - this way you not only get the final file, but also your TM will be updated wit the last changes in the file.
    For working with multiple files do not use the "Translate single document" method, but go for a project instead. This makes the handling of many files (and even several files in several subfolders) much easier.

    Yes Walter's answer is extremely useful I am so grateful to all experts in the community helping the novices like me.
    So far as the working with multiple files is concerned - as you know - it is been a lesson for me. Hopefully I will handle it better the next time.
