How to restore *.sdlppx (SDL Trados Studio Project Package) file association

I have a user who for some reason lost the file association for *.sdlppx (SDL Trados Studio Project Package)

Under Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations I can set it to use SDL Trados Studio again, but the description just reads SDLPPX instead of "SDL Trados Studio Project Package". Additionally, when the user double clicks the *.sdlppx file, it opens Studio but not the Open Package screen to expand the package files for use in Studio. The user is forced to use File > Open Package instead. I uninstalled Studio and reinstalled it again, but it seems that the file association remains the same.

Is there a way to restore the correct Open Package behavior in Studio for SDLPPX? If so, how?

  • Hi Roman,

Did you try this running a repair installation to force the reassociation, do it via the windows control panel?

If you did and that also failed try this one which involves Registry Editing (removing):

Check HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.sdlppx and see where it points – it should be SDL.TradosProjectPackage.1 but in some cases it was changed tosdlppx_auto_file

If you find this you can try to correct it to point to SDL.TradosProjectPackage.1 or  just remove both .sdlppx and sdlppx_auto_file then repair Studio.

This should correctly recreate the Registry keys.

An alternative would be to check if sdlppx_auto_file has the command

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio4\SDLTradosStudio.exe" /openProject "%1"

    It might be

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio4\SDLTradosStudio.exe" /openDocument "%1" which is incorrect.

Studio 4 is the Studio 2015, if 2014 then use Studio3.

  • Hi Paul,

the Rerair doesn't work for me. My issue is the same as described Lorenzo, namely: files .sdlppx and .sdlrpx have type "SDLPPX File" and "SDLRPX File" correspondingly, but not "SDL Trados Studio Project Package" and 'SDL Trados Studio Return Package". Moreover, they have icons of SDL Trados Studio, but not the one with arrows. In the Registry I have now only .sdlppx (with the value SDL.TradosProjectPackage.1) and .sdlrpx (with the value SDL.TradosReturnPackage.1). These values I wrote by myself, because there were the values "PackageReader.sdlppx" and "PackageReader.sdlrpx". What I need is to have back the appropriate icons (association) for packages. Should I try deleting both the .sdlppx and .sdlrpx in the Registry with following Repair?
  • Hi Roman,

If you also attempted the registry edits and this also fails then try uninstalling Studio altogether, then clear any leftover registry items (crapcleaner may be good for this) and then reinstall from scratch, making sure you install as admin. So right-click and select "install as admin".

If that doesn't work then probably best to get support to make a look next week.

  • Hi Paul,

thank you for your assistance. I think, I wait till the Studio 2017 will be released, then anyway I will delete the Studio 2015 and install the new Studio 2017. I think, after that it will be back everything to normal. Plus, maybe I get any hints from Lorenzo.

  • Hi Roman

In addition to what Paul suggested here, I also reinstalled Studio (to no avail) and logged a case with Support, and this is what they said:

(...) As this is a OS file type association issue, I advise you to associate this file type manually as follow:

    1.Go to: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations

    2.search for .sdlppx file type

    3. Select .sdlppx and hit "change program" button.

    4. Depending on your OS version, the value data should be: "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio4\SDLTradosStudio.exe"

Once the association done, please find a .sdlppx and double click on it.

I am pleased to report that something did the trick :-)

  • Hi Lorenzo,

thank you! It worked for me.

I went through first 3 steps you wrote, but after hitting the "change programm" button, I choose "Look for another app on this PC". After that I found in the Program Files/SDL Trados Studio/Studio4/ the file SDLTradosStudio.exe and hit the Open button. After the window for file associations was reloaded, the association was repaired.

    Regards
