Error message The file doesn't exist

Hi everybody,.

I work on translation since yesterday and today this message appear when I want to open my file: The file doesn't exist. [:@] 

I don't understand why. I begin to be under stress....

  • When does the message appear? During start of Studio?
    Please check the folder, where the file has been stored. Usually you should have a backup, so in case of doubt return to the saved version of the file from the backup and use the TM from the old project to add any missing translations.
    Should you not have the file anymore, just create a new project with the original source file and use the TM to insert the translations you've done since the beginning.

    Thank you for your answer.
    This message is appeared when I have wanted to open my file. No problem during the start of studio. It's when I clic on my file this message appear. I have search my file in the folder and It has disappeared???? So I had to do again my translation since the beginning?
  • If your file has indeed disappeared from the folder where it was saved, then I do not see any other possibility as to start again.
    But files do not disappear on their own - and Studio does certainly NOT delete any files. A damaged file might happen, but not a file which disappeared. Where is the file located? ON your HDD, in the cloud (like DropBox or similar) or maybe on an USB stick?
    Do you have any backup of your files?

    If you don't have backup, take the TM from yesterday and start anew. The translations are stored in the TM, so you will not lose them. For the future do not store anything on an USB stick or in the cloud directly, but put your files in a separate partition of your HDD - not on C:\, where Windows and programs are installed, but create a new partition and store files there (if not yet done). Create daily backup of your files, so then you're on the safe side.

  • Thank you Jerzy: I'am a new beginner on Trados. I had register the file on C:\ so for the next time I will register on an extern support.I have started anew with the TM from yesterday. I have a lot of work today! Thank you for your help and have a nice day.

  • If you are a beginner, so it is really crucial to find a decent storage system for your files.
    Here is a possible storage scheme, which of course may be modified to your needs.
    Before you start, create a partition on your HDD for files. Using Windows 7 or above this is very easy - please refer to Windows help on that.
    Translation memories stored in d:\resources\TMs\language pair\customer
    Termbases stored in d:\resources\TBs\customer
    Files stored in d:\work\customer\job number\

    If you create such structure on any PC you have, you will be able to move projects between these computers with no loss of your settings.
    When working with Studio, a systematic approach is also crucial. When you do something, observe what happens when. If something goes wrong, repeat the steps until the point where it went wrong and change the method there.
    Please also remember, that using "Translate single file" requires you to adapt the settings every time you start, while creating projects may be based on project templates, which saves time in the long run.

    One needs to remember too, that once the file has been opened or the project created, all further settings must be done within this very project!

    I suggest that you get some basic training before you start, this will make life much easier.
    You can get this either through the available webinars, by attending a training class (there are such offers in French in France) or alternatively by viewing the various available video tutorials (see the "Get Started" tab on your "Home" view in Studio).
