Search and replace window not following main window.

When Studio 2015 was open on second monitor and I was going to use only the laptop, I moved the program window to the laptop screen. But when I then tried to use Find & Replace, I noticed the window opened on the desktop for the second monitor, which was at home. So during my travel I could not use Find & Replace. Restarting did not help. This is a very stupid bug. Studio does not remember where it was open last time, but always opens on the primary screen, version 2014 was better in that respect.

  • Hello Heinrich,

I'm not sure how to reproduce this problem. I messed around a bit with 2014 and 2015 but both seem to behave the same way. Does this happen if you move locations while Studio is still running or if you close it and reopen after moving to a new location?

    Regards

  • Hello Heinrich, hello Paul,

I have been facing this problem twice during the last few weeks as well. Initially I transferred Studio 2015 to a second monitor but retrieved it to the first monitor before shutting down the computer. When opening Studio 2015 again it initially worked as usual but when I minimized Studio and wanted to enlarge it again, it suddenly disappeared to the non-existent second monitor.

My workaround was to maximize the minimized window which worked. The strange thing was that it behaved normal after several "minimizings & maximizings". Never had this problem with any other version before.

  • I think this problem is not exclusive to Studio, and it can be very frustrating. Luckily there's a simple solution, described here: www.howtogeek.com/.../
  • Hi Nora

The problem is that the proposed solution does not work the way it is described on Windows versions higher than Windows 7.
Cascading the windows shows the cascaded windows on the (non-existent) second monitor, which is of no help.
When you do ALT-TAB to see all the windows miniatures, you can't apply any command to them. Hitting ALT-SPACE will make the miniature disappear again. Also clicking on the taskbar while the windows is in focus only shows the menu to arrange windows (like cascading), but you never get to the "Move" menu.

It is really difficult (and frustrating) to reset the window to the primary monitor if you are running Windows 10.

  • Hi Walter,

This procedure works for me in Windows 10:

Press CTRL+F in Studio to activate the Search&Replace window, press ALT+TAB to select the Search&Replace miniature, release ALT+TAB keys, then press ALT+SPACE, press the hotkey to move any window (probably “M”, but dependes on the language of Windows operating system; if you pressed the right key, the mouse cursor will change to the big cross shown in Noras‘ link). Finally, keep pressing the LEFT or RIGHT keys until the Search&Replace window appears on your screen (it shouldn’t take more than 10 seconds to come up, otherwise you know you‘re moving the window in the opposite direction).
