Why does Studio 2015 keep crashing?

Yesterday my subscription for studio starter 2014 ran out, so I downloaded the 2015 version, and it's been nothing but trouble since.

I was able to translate a small Word document with no problems, but I have a sdlxppx package from an agency client that I need to translate by tomorrow. It is a very large file. I was able to translate the first 30 segments or so with no problem, but after that it started crashing after every couple of words.

It's been giving me all sorts of excuses, at first it gave an 'out of memory' error when I tried to save the file, and then it just stopped responding at all, i'd open it, type about one segment, then it would crash again. Now it won't even open the file at all.

I work on a Mac, using parallels 10 and windows 8...

Is there anyone else who has had any problem like this...?

  • Is your virtual machine for Windows configured properly? The memory errors would mean there is not enough memory added to the VM.
So please add as much memory as possible, bearing in mind, that 4 GB is not much.
After you've done that please open the file in Studio and use "Reset window layout" from the "View" ribbon.
If all this means will not help, you need to reset Studio settings. Please return here to get instructions how to do that.

This said I must say, that Studio 2015 is a really stable software and does not crash more often than MS Office here.

  • Hi Jerzy, thank you very much for your answer - I did everything you said and it did seem to be working better for a short while, but then after a while I came to the same problematic segment and it froze, then closed itself, and when I opened Studio again and tried to re-open the project, it said "the file location does not exist".

So I closed Trados again, went to the folder and found the sdlxliff file and tried to open it directly from the sdlxliff, and it said "You cannot open alignment result files in your Studio edition. Upgrade your licence to enable this feature". I have no idea what this means.. . do you have any idea?

    Thanks in advance
  • This is normal for the Starter edition. This edition is highly limited and does not include features like aligment (and manymore)
So or so - try to reset Studio by renaming the whole folder: C:\Users\Userr Name\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio
Should you not see the folder, refer to this help article: www.bleepingcomputer.com/.../

  • I don't understand though why it opened the file at first and then suddenly decided it cannot open it after all... Anyway, I deleted all of the project files, re-downloaded it from my email and started again, and it went fine for a while (by which I mean only crashing once an hour or so but opening fine, (and no "you cannot open alignment result files" message) but now it has crashed again and said at first "cannot validate SDL plug-in: Sdl.Desktop.Platform.Implementation.Exceptions.FilteredExceptionFilter, etc. etc." then I tried to open it again and it said "The exception unknown software exception (0xe0434352) occurred in the application at location 0x77484598." so I closed and tried to re-open and now it is saying "The file location does not exist" - which it also said for a while yesterday. Even though it does exist.

I tried re-naming the folder, although I am not sure if I have done it correctly, as it was already called SDL Trados Studio, but I re-named it as the same thing, it does not seem to have done anything..
  • Hi Amy,

Perhaps now is a good time to log a case and have a support engineer help you with this? This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    http://support.xl8.one/

Just fill in the form and submit it. If you can, use the Chrome browser to log the case, you'll get more success in completing the form, and make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

    Regards
