Is it possible to choose another location of the "Studio 2015" folder than in the "Documents" folder?

I am about to install Studio 2015, and I am wondering if it is possible to choose another location of the "Studio 2015" folder than in the "Documents" folder?

More specifically, I might want to put it in my Dropbox folder for the purpose of automatic backup. I am also considering putting it on a different drive on my computer in order to be able to access it from outside of Windows (since I run Windows in a VirtualBox environment on a Linux computer).

Can this be done - perhaps during installation and setup? And if so, how?

Can it also be done later on?

    You have to install Studio on the C drive, there is (from what I know) no way to change that. Also some Studio files must go to the local Documents folder. However it is quite easy to put it (the Documents) folder to any location you wish. So by right clicking this folder you can change its location also to OneDrive for example.
    However, the files which go to this folder are not the working files you need. All project files can be stored wherever you wish. If you translate a single document, the corresponding files will be by default stored in the same folder as the source file. When you create a project, you can chose any location in your computer you wish. In your project template you can set a default folder, where all projects from this template shall go. And if you receive a package, you can place the files from this package in any folder of you choice - the only requirement here is, that this folder must be empty.
    All this settings are not done during installation. You chose the location for single files by storing the source files wherever you wish. In case of projects you do that during the project creation. And afterwards you can create a template based on this project. This template can be edited - and so the default path for this template.

    Dear Jerzy, thank you very much for your reply.

    I understand that the actual project files can be put anywhere. What I had in mind was stuff like the projects.xml file and the files in the Project Templates folder, but these are perhaps examples of the files you mention which must go to the local Documents folder?

    For backup reasons (and for tidiness), I thought it would be nice to keep everything in one place (as indeed intended by the defaults), I just want this one place to be somewhere else than the Documents folder and the C drive if possible.

    I am not sure I have understood you answers completely, so I have a few clarifying questions:
    Do you think the Documents folder can be moved to another drive (in my case for instance a dedicated M drive which would be a shared folder between my Windows 7 virtual machine and the Linux host machine), or MUST it stay on the C drive in order to count as local?
    Are the files and folders in questions unavoidably created on the C drive during installation and cannot be moved?
    I am not familiar with OneDrive, so I am not sure what that would correspond to as a location. Would that be a local location? Does that example mean that Dropbox would also be an option?
    Actually, I am not sure moving the entire Documents folder would be wise, since it already contains my Studio 2011 folder. Do you think I could perhaps simply create a second folder called "Documents" at the desired location and use that for Studio 2015? Is it simply the folder name that matters here, or does the Documents folder have some special properties that must be retained?

    Sorry about asking so many questions. I just want to do it right ...

    Moving "My documents" folder (or whatever it is called in your computer): www.techsupportalert.com/.../how-move-windows-7-personal-folders-my-documents-another-drive.htm. If you move the "Documents" folder in Windows that way, Studio 2011 will know this new location by default, as will also other programs do.

    The only files which have to go to this "Document" folder (which I btw have placed on my drive D:\ in my OneDrive, so you could easily put them for example into Dropbox) are: Projects.xml and maybe some few other files, about which I am not sure. You can keep you project templates in a location different than that.
    The Projects.xml is only a reference list to your projects, project templates and users. So it does not really matter, where it is - and if you put it into Dropbox, it will be even backuped there.

    As for the projects - store them wherever you wish, there is no* limit to it.
    * Particularly not, because Windows limits the path length to 256 characters.

    I might leave this question open until I have tried everything out and made sure I don't have any follow-up questions. I hope that is okay.

    Quite simply, yes you can.  Don't get into moving your documents folder... actually I don't think you suggested this in the first place.  Just decide where you want your folders to be and start using that location.  You can even set the preferred location in your project templates:

    You can do this at anytime.

    So the "Studio 2015" folder (with the "Projects" subfolder) is not created automatically when Studio is first installed? Because I am not only talking about putting the actual project files somewhere else. I want everything related to Studio (except for program files) moved out of the Documents folder if possible. Jerzy said that a few files must stay there. But you disagree?

    What is the problem with moving my Documents folder?

    This folder is created with the first start of Studio...
    Please do yourself a favor and try to move a project and test it with Studio 2011. In that respect the behavior of both S2011 and S2015 is exactly the same.

    Re moving Documents folder: if you follow the instructions given in the article, the Documents folder will still be seen as system folder. More explanation is here www.windowscentral.com/how-manage-file-storage-windows-10

    I don't disagree.  This folder will be created and will always be there:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Projects\

    But this doesn't mean you have to put your projects in there if you don't want to.  I'd recommend you do because Studio works better when you let it do what it wants to, but using a different location or even multiple locations for your projects is not too hard to manage in Studio 2015.

    The projects.xml file will however always be in the Studio default folder here:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Projects\

    That's what Jerzy means.

    Dear Jerzy, thank you, I will certainly do some experimenting in Studio 2011 first. It is great to know that I can expect the same behaviour from Studio 2015.

    No problem if you like to make work for yourself for no particularly good reason!

    A very good reason - space on HDD. My main drive is a small SSD with 256 GB, where the whole OS and programs including the hidden restore partition are stored. So getting rid of Documents and Pictures from there and putting them to D (which is 2 TB) is really a good reason.
