Working with a tmx file exported from Trados 7 in Studio 2015 and converting it back

Hi all,

for a potential project we received an Excel file to be translated and a tmx file exported from Trados 7 as TM material. After the translation we would need to send the client an updated tmx file that is compatible with Trados 7. However, normally we work with Trados 2015.

I have a version of Trados 2007 installed on an old computer but the license doesn't seem to work. I have contacted support; however, it's not fixed yet and I am not sure if it will work.

So I thought I try it in Studio 2015. I created an empty TM and imported the file. In some segments (but only some) special characters like "ö" or "å" are not correct. I checked the original tmx file with WordPad and there are the same mistakes, so it is not caused by the import but is a problem with the original file. Is there an easy possibility to correct this or do I just have to live with this?

After the translation I would like to export it back to tmx for use in Trados 7 for the client. I saw that there is a check box for using the tmx with Trados 2007. I am now wondering if the exported file would also work with Trados 7. I did a test export and when I open them in WordPad naturally there are some differences as these are different versions. However, the part with the entries looks relatively similar and I don't know how it would work in Trados 7 itself.

The file also contains parts that could be converted to placeholders by Trados 2015 with the Embedded contents function (like <b> </b>) but I am not sure if I could use this as it perhaps causes problems for Trados 7.

Has anyone experiences with Trados 7 compatibility?

    Hi Sara,

    If it will help I'd be happy to look at this with you?  The Trados TMX export is good and I have not heard of any problems.  I think if you need to work in this workflow and the client wants a TMX they can use to pretranslate the Excel file themselves in the future then you are missing an important part of the correct workflow for this.

    This is what I think should be the best approach:

    1. Convert the Excel file to TTX
    2. Upgrade the TMX to an SDLTM ensuring you use the compatibility option for source files that are TTX (not essential but might improve your leverage)
    3. Translate your TTX
    4. Save the target TTX and just send that back to your client.

    They can then clean it up as the olden days and get the Excel and an updated TM that will properly pretranslate the excel completely if they were to try it.  This article might be interesting reading for you:

    Hi Paul,

    Thank you for your reply. I have to admit I am not really familiar with TTX files and older versions of Trados as I have only worked with SDL Trados Studio 2011 and up. I don't understand why a conversion to TTX would be necessary and maybe my explanation was too confusing.
    I thought about the following workflow:
    1. Create an empty TM in Trados Studio and import the TMX file from the customer
    2. Create a project in Trados studio, do the translation and export it back to Excel
    3. Export the TM to a TMX file (checking the box for using it in Trados 2007 and hoping that it is compatible with Trados 7 as well; I would probably need to check it with the client)
    The client would like to get the finished Excel file and an updated TMX file that they can use with Trados 7.

    If this worked, my questions would be:
    Does someone already know if this Trados 2007 TMX exported from Trados 2015 would cause problems when used in Trados 7?
    Would it be possible to use the embedded content function to exclude parts like <b></b> from the translation or would this cause problems in Trados 7?

    Apparently the Trados 2007 export works fine in Trados 7, so I willl just use Trados 2015 for this.
    For the tags I will do a search and replace in the tmx file.
