Word count result very different to MS Word

Ahoy Trados Ninjas! A quick question regarding word count: any idea why the Trados word count shows significantly less characters than MS Word? (even if I choose without spaces in Word - btw, does Trados count with or without spaces?)
Cheers!

Dani

  • Hi Daniela,

This article could use an update I think, but on the whole it is still very relevant.  Might help you answer this question:

  • Hi Paul, Thanks for the prompt reply and the link. I need to calculate the amount of lines at 55 characters each in a document though and therefore words are not helpful - I need to know the characters (including spaces). Any suggestions?

    Best wishes,
    Dani
  • Hi Dani,

Have you tried the InQuote app from the app store, this can report in lines?

But in a nutshell Studio counts without spaces in the reports.  Word offers both.  So the InQuote app does an approximation by taking the wordcount and adding the number of words to the number of characters and this gives you approx. the number of characters plus spaces... and even reduce it by the number of segments as well if you want to be closer to Word.  So you could do this yourself easily enough in excel as you have the report showing words and characters in the same same line like this.

So this is just "number of characters"+"number of words"-"number of segments" and put into a column called "Line Count" in red.  The equivalent text in Word was this:

  • Thanks again Paul. I've downloaded and installed the InQuote app now but can't find it anywhere in Trados or on my computer? I might just stick with Word for this then as I don't see the benefit of doing it myself in Excel to be honest. It would be nice to have an app to generate a quote - is there anything else I need to do after installing the InQuote app to actually work with it? Do you regret having replied to my initial question yet? ;)

  • Hi Dani :-)

You already have the excel format as this comes directly from Studio. All I did was insert one column and copy paste the formulae to calculate the characters. You could then add another summary for the lines, also really easy once you have a template setup and can just copy the formulae across when needed.

However, the InQuote app can do this too and also lets you build your customised quotes in Excel, or Word. If you can't find it, and usually it puts an icon on your desktop, then try looking here:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\OpenExchange Apps\Sdl Community InvoiceAndQuotes\Sdl.Community.StudioInQuote.exe

Create a shortcut from this exe file to run it.

  • Dear Paul,
Thank you for your patience! I found the InQuote but now InQuote doesn´t find my project file I want to calculate a quote for. Gah, there´s always something! ;-) What format does this need to be in? I opened it in Trados as "Translate a single document" and then saved it. InQuote does not recognise any of the files Trados created...

    Cheers,
    Dani
  • Hi Daniela,

Did you run a report in Studio? The app essentially uses the Studio report but displays it in the way you prefer.

  • I did. But when I go to that reports folder the app tells me that no files match my search?
  • Hi Daniela,

Have you saved your single file project? Press Ctrl+S in Studio when the file is open in the Editor. This will create the project and InQuote may recognise it this time.

Can you also share an image of the error you are getting?

    Thank you

    Paul

Yes, I saved it after running the report. I can see the file in the reports folder in the Explorer, just not when I go there via InQuote...
