Preventing font changed in target file

Hello,

I have a problem with target files where font changes are applied.

See the example below (Scopul predării) where the Romanian character "ă" appear in a different font in Word (Times New Roman).
The rest of the characters are in Arial Unicode MS (as was in the source)

Is there a way to prevent this from happening

  • Hi Roberto,

The first thing is you need to embed your images, so use the rich formatting option to get a toolbar with more options:

On your question.  It could be a tag thing... maybe you are not showing your formatting tags and have not carried over the controls to set the right font?  Try pressing Ctrl+Shift+H and this will display formattting tags so you can check if there are any you haven't used.

It could also be a bug we have already fixed.  Can you confirm what version of Studio you are using and also what filetype.  So in Studio 2015 for example there are three filetypes for Word:

Using a different one might help if there is a real problem with another.

    Regards

  • Hello Paul,

Thank you for the advice, sorry I am new to the system.

    I am using Trados Studio 2015 Professional SR2 - 12.2.5141.6 and Word 2010 professional

I tried pressing Ctrl+Shift+H but nothing happens (either in Word or in Studio).

This is the screenshot of the target in Word (look at the "ă" in "Scopul predării" as an example).

And this is what it looks like in Studio

    Regards

  • Hi Roberto,

That's an interesting question!  I just tested this in Studio 2015 and it looks like this for me:

That won't help you much but it does mean we need to look at something in your specific files.  Can you share your source file with me?  Even if you cut all the text out except for that line it would be helpful... although please make sure you can reproduce the problem with the new cut down file first.

You can email it me at pfilkin@sdl.com

  • For me it looks like the font used does not support your language.
Word is a great cheater - it uses a font available on your machine to substitute a customer font, which is not present on your machine, but it won't tell you that. So if the font used was for example Myriad, Word used a similar like Frutiger, but as Frutiger won't support your target language, Word puts the special characters in Times New Roman or Arial Unicode.
In my opinion this does not have anything to do with Studio and cannot be avoided here at all. The best way to deal with such problems is to use a font which does support the desired language.
