RTL effectiveness

Hello and please excuse me if this question has been answered before, or if this is the wrong forum for it.


I am a Hebrew-English translator, and am considering investing in Trados. I haven't done so yet because I've been led to understand that CAT tools don't fare well with RTL languages. Are there any RTL translators out there who rely on Trados and find it useful? I'm currently on my month's free trial and am finding that when I import the source file, a lot of the acronyms, numbers, fields, brackets, quotation marks and so on upload in the wrong order. When I then export the translation document the formatting is very mixed up. Is this due to the limitations of the software, or user error?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    I think RTL support is pretty good these days in Studio.  You can find an excellent article on this, written almost three years ago by  here:

    It was using Studio 2014 but think things have only got better since then.

    Hi Maya,

    Studio supports Hebrew pretty well. There are some best practices to follow, one needs to understand how the Unicode Bi-directionality algorithm works (I'm biased ;), but I think the article Paul linked to covers the subject pretty well. You mostly need to focus on the RLM and LRM directionality control characters)) and some quirks to work around or at least take into account to make the work more efficient, but overall except for one major bug with processing PowerPoint Presentations (which may or may not be solved in the upcoming release of Studio 2017) there are no major showstopping-like issues that should prevent you from using Studio if you otherwise like it.

    I also agree with Paul that things are gradually improving and little by little minor annoyances are being ironed out.
