Cannot convert Word file with comments

I have a Word file with unusual comments. When I try to convert the file to translatable format, I receive the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

This error disappears when I delete the comments from the file.

The comments look like this:

I don't recall ever seeing the "Reply" and "Resolve" options in a Word comment box before.

Any ideas about what could be wrong?

  • Hi Michael,

You are right about the comment. My mistake!

I just upgraded from Word 2007 to 2016 last year and have not really looked closely at the comments before.

    Here is the situation:

If I delete the comment, I can convert the file to a translatable format.

But if I delete most of the text before and after the comment, while leaving the comment, I can also convert the file. (Which makes it impossible to create a test file for Paul to look at ...)

This made me think there might be some sort of damage to the original file.

But if I save the file in the old Word 2003-2007 format, I still get an error when I try to convert the Word 2003-2007 file to a translatable format. Bizarre.

I don't have time to try anything else at the moment, so I am going to have to leave this as a bizarre problem that hopefully will not occur again in my lifetime ;-)

    Thank you for your help!
