During a recent webinar James asked the following questions relating to Studio 2017 - we thought we'd share them for discussion!

I’m a big fan of Studio, but there are four "small" things I'm hoping new version will do that are currently frustrating for me (as a German-to-English-only freelance):

1. Consistent application of smart quotes (the function is a bit flaky at the moment – seems to vary with the speed I type, and smart quotes are rarely applied on suggestions from TM/MT).

2. Recognition of German-format numbers and dates (this is highly unsatisfactory at the moment – probably because of the wide variety of ways German separate 1000s and decimals)

3. Ability to order files within a project by date of receipt – usually the file imported last is listed last, which is OK, but sometimes it seems more random and I can't work out how to reestablish a date order

4. Ability to maximize preview window with one click!

Thanks

  • Hi Fiona,

Here's my best shot at these ones!!

Quotation marks from the TM are always going to take on the format they are in the TM.  MT is different and to a large extent is dependent on the MT provider and how the plugin was developed.  It would be good to have examples of where they don't work correctly so we can correct the ones in our hands at least... so SDL language Cloud and Google Translate.

On the speed thing... I have seen this before with very fast typists.  Perhaps one way to get around this is to use something like Autohotkey and see whether this responds differently when typing so fast.  Would be an interesting test.  On whether this is different in Studio 2017... I don't really know.  I think you'll need to test it and see once we release a trial.

Numbers and date formatting are driven by your operating system.  So whatever Microsoft thinks the numbers should be, Studio uses.  There are ways to get around this, for example:

    • change the number settings in the windows control panel to match your needs. Restart your computer and Studio and you should see the changes available to you in Studio
    • use plugins such as the Regex autoSuggest Provider from the SDL AppStore which can do a great job of converting to whatever you want on the fly
    • change the source numbers (if the problem is the source text) so that they match what Studio expects.  Not too hard if you use something like the SDLXLIFF Toolkit from the SDL AppStore
    • allow Studio to do what it wants with the numbers and search replace the target afterwards - possibly in one go across the whole project if you use the SDLXLIFF Toolkit

But as for Studio 2017... nothing new in this regard.  Studio still uses the underlying formats of your operating system.

I'd also like to see more flexibility here and more use made of the project management and file management views.  There is no change in Studio 2017 from this perspective.

Nice idea!  Not part of studio 2017 though.  No easy workaround either unless you have two screens and can just keep it available on the other screen.  Not really a workaround I know... but don't know how you are working now.

I'm so glad I read this! I had no idea that number and date formatting came from Windows. I've been complaining about the added days of the week in the long date format and a.m./p.m. in the long time for a while now but I hadn't come across the suggestion to change the settings in Windows. I'll share this with my team immediately, as this tends to be a big issue with some client files.

    Thanks Paul!

  • Hi Nora, I hope this works for you. The problem with this approach when working with teams is inconsistency as you might have to ensure all people in the team have the same customized Windows settings. I'd love to see a customizable resource used in the project... this would be better.

    Cheers

  • That would indeed be much better. What we're doing now is changing the settings at the project level, but someone will invariably forget to make the change in their computer for a new package and we will have days of the week creeping up here and there, so it would be better if the change could be made once and for all so we could stop wasting time on this.

    Thanks!
  • Thanks for all that Paul. The smart quotes thing is weird. And actually it's not so much smart quotes as smart apostrophes. I've just tried typing "London's" several times in several different segments at several different speeds. Sometimes the apostrophe was smart and sometimes not - I though I'd detected a pattern (first instance in a segment non-smart, subsequent ones smart) but then that failed too.
The German numbers/dates thing is probably the biggest irritant. I'd like to be able to set different formats for all my different clients - who use different formats in German and all want different formats in English. I guess there is no solution (apart from the workarounds you suggest) while Studio is dependent on the Windows settings. I guess there's a technical reason which makes it too hard for Studio to create flexibility here?
    Anyway, thanks again
    James

    Hi James,

I reckon it could be done technically, but it's probably non-trivial, so as an item of work compared to other things in the backlog it's probably not had the business need to push it up the priority list.  It affects a lot of areas and not just recognition as you translate... analysis, placeables, project settings, supply chain are a few I can think of as I'm writing this.  These are all areas which need careful thought before changing things.

  • I second this. This is the way it used to work in good old Trados Workbench. Auto-substitution was entirely configurable within the Workbench software.
Unfortunately, the developers of Studio thought they could take the settings from Window and save a setting inside Studio. They probably didn't realize the implications due to lack of expertise in real life (I don't blame them for this, only an experienced user will know about this).
I would also like to see again the possibility to customize this inside Studio.
