Have any improvements been made on the review/QA system? On very big files, the QA tasks can become extremely slow (dozens of minutes as compared to just a few seconds in xBench for the same kind of checks).

I don't believe there has been a lot of work done on this so don't expect wide ranging changes. But many users take advantage of the Number Verifier for some of the checks that previously took longer and often resulted in false positives. So disable the built in checks and use the plugin instead. Maybe this is worth trying to see if this provides any improvements?
