The normal way to exchange between client and external translator is to use project packages. The client creates a project package which he sends to the translator. This one opens it, does the translation and sends back a "return package".

If you did receive such a package, simply create a return package and send it back.

If you did not, you can simply send your client the SDLXLIFF file. He can use this to do the review and to update his TM.

You did not answer my question, which concerned the phase AFTER I have sent the file/package back to the client. What I do not know is what to do when the client sends me back a reviewed file and I am supposed to accept/reject the changes made to my translation.

Review mode allows you to accept or reject every change individually.

If you are the last one in the chain and the final decision, you can open the file in sign-off mode and accept all changes in one go.

You can also use a quite easy process, called "Export for external review". In the Files view in Studio right click the file you want to send or go to Project - Batch tasks, if you want to send the whole process, and chose "Export for external review". Follow the easy steps on the screen. Send the generated Word file to the customer for review. Receive it and save. Make sure your customer is using ONLY Word 2007/2010, as otherwise you will get problems with reimporting. Now go back to Studio and use "Update from external review" task. When asked for the reviewed file, point to the file you've received. After your SDLXLIFF file has been updated, right click on it in the Files view and open for Sign-off to accept or reject changes.

Thanks for the information all respondents. I still have two questions:

1. If I want to send the sdlxliff file to the client, which sdlxliff file do I send, as there are two in the project files, the one in the folder fi-FI or the one in the folder en-GB under the project folder in question (in this case a Fi-FI-En-GB project)?

2. When I receive a reviewed sdlxliff file back from the client, how do I import the file into Studio? Do I add it as a new file to the project or simply add document (as a new project) - how do I link it to the previously handled project files or is the file handled as a new project?

1. You send the one in the target language folder.  The other one is not fully segmented (no target language segments) and is only there to allow you to add more languages to your Project that would then be segmented properly and added to another language folder... if you wanted to

2. If it was sent as a package (if you have Professional) then you double click the return package that is sent back to you.  If it's just the sdlxliff then you simply save it into your target language folder to overwrite the original (good to take a copy of the original first)

Just one more question: is it not possible to process packages with Freelance?

Hi Suvi,

It is possible to open Packages and create Return Packages with Freelance.  But you can't create the Package to send to another user.  There's an article here explaining this that may be worth a read when you get a few minutes: http://goo.gl/OFdYx

In case of freelance send out the SDLXLIFF from the target language folder. After receiving it back, make a backup copy of your original SDLXIFF file in the target folder and then replace the file there with the one you've received from the customer.

In Studio in the Files view right click the file and open for sign-off to accept or reject changes.

Or - better - use the Export for external review process.
