Off to a stumbling start

I have had Studio 2011 for about two months, and I admit I am still baffled by it. Most of my work is from Danish to English, and there are not too many resources for that pair yet. My big problem is not understanding how to create my own translation memories. I have used the product to translate quite a few docs (and frankly, I am faster without it) but when I try to save things so that I can start to create a translation memory and history, it doesn't seem to take. The next time I use the software, it reverts back to the Global community or Google translation memories, which are pretty basic at this point. If someone could direct me to some basic tutorials or give me some tips, I would be most thankful. I am not getting much love from the product yet...

  • When you create a project or use the "Open document" command, you have both the Add and Create buttons on the screen for TMs. Use the "Create" one to create a TM for the language pair you need. Now remember the name and the path to the TM you created. Next time you can then use the Add button to add this TM. Make also sure, that the "Update" checkbox on the TM adding screen is selected, as otherwise your TM will not get updated.

Then go to the Translation memory view in Studio. From there open this TM. After it has opened press CTRL+F4. This will close this TM from editing. Now right click the name of this TM on the left hand side (this vertical part of Studio is called navigation pane) and chose Import. Import the SDLXLIFF files with your translations - this way the TM will also contain the translation you've already done.
