AdaptiveMT = way too expensive

I have been playing around with the Studio 2017 beta now for a few weeks, and so far it looks really interesting. I have actually already successfully translated quite a few actual jobs with it. Sadly, AdaptiveMT (one of the main features I was looking forward to trying out) isn't yet available for my language pair/direction (Dutch into English), but I was told it is on its way. However, there is a bit of a problem. Until recently, I wasn't aware that to use the new AdaptiveMT feature you would need to pay for a subscription to SDL's Language Cloud. I had a quick look, and it is very expensive, and in my view prohibitively so. At the current rates, I doubt if many freelance translators will be able to justify getting it.

Especially since the quality of the Language Cloud engines I have tried so far is nowhere near as good as vanilla Google Translate (via the API/plugin).

  • Hi Michael,

    When Studio 2017 launches all users of SDL Trados Studio 2017 (Freelance and Professional) will receive 1 x Adaptive Engine as part of their Studio 2017 licence - this will be at no cost.  If there is a requirement for additional Adaptive MT engines then there will be a charge for these.

    When you first sign into Studio 2017 (final release) you will be given the option to subscribe to the Adaptive Engine via Language Cloud.  This doesn't currently show in the BETA version.  There is no requirement for your to take a paid Language Cloud subscription you just need to have a Language Cloud account.

    What you currently see on the Language Cloud Pricing pages via the SDL website, doesn't reflect the Adaptive MT pricing/details as yet but will be updated at launch.
