Experiences from prepping TMs for upLIFT

Since this didn't go quite as expected, I thought I'd share my experiences. Save others the surprises.

I started Reindex and twelve hours later, it was still working on my TM folder (which includes two million-segment TMs). At least it looked like it was still working. The only indication was that there was no "Not responding" message on the title bar and that Task Manager showed the computer was working.

I needed to get to work, so I elected to click the Cancel button. It took about an hour for the cancellation process to complete, likely because I cancelled while it was working on one of my huge TMs.

Once the process had stopped, I saw that five smaller TMs in the folder were reindexed, but only half of one of the two huge ones was. I later reindexed one of the million-segment TMs using the stock tool in Studio on a back-up computer. It took about six hours. So for those of us who have large TMs, reindexing should be done on a back-up machine, regardless of if you use the stock solution or the Reindex app.

Reindex really needs a process indicator as well as an estimate of how much time reindexing will take. And it would also be nice to be able to select individual TMs rather than entire TM folders.

And by the way, upLIFT seems to be worth the effort. :)

  • Thanks for sharing guys... I agree about the progress indicator. We built the tool a while ago for a reindex process as opposed to the upLIFT preparation process and we just extended it by adding this functionality. Reindex was a little faster than upLIFT and it was a standalone tool previously.

We'll look at adding some kind of process indicator... just don't want to waste valuable development time on something that is more of a one-off use than a tool you'd use every day.

  • Thanks Paul. I'm just about done with reindexing an upLIFT so it would be not a lot of help to me now, but there is an awful lot of people out there who still have to make a start with Studio 2017 and the upgrading all of their TMs. It is a time consuming process and I would think that as the CPU usage is in single figures even a super quick computer would not be that much faster, so a time remaining estimate would help a lot.

If I have two TMs that have already been reindexed and upLIFTed and I merged them, would I have to reindex and upLIFT the new combined TM?

    Cheers
