Studio 2017 as a default programme

Since I upgraded from Studio 2015 to Studio 2017, I have got problems with some file-program associations.

Studio 17 is the default program to open .sdlalign, .sdlppx, .sdlproj, .sdlretrofit, .sdlrpx, .sdltm, but I cannot select it to be the default program to open .sdlfiletype, .sdltpl and, more seriously, .sdlxliff, which canot be changed from "unknown application".

I think I know how it should normally be done, as I had the same problem with some MultiTerm file types and I could solve it smoothly.

I performed repairs and even new setups of Studio 2017, losing time and settings: no way! Has anyone got an idea which might help?

  • Hello Paul,
Thank you for the links to the Microsoft support (I use Windows 7), but I clearly mentioned that I could easily solve the very same problem with two MultiTerm file types, which means that the MS support page did not teach me anything and that the problem might be with (my?) Studio 17 itself.
By the way, Studio 17 and MultiTerm are obviously listed among the installed programs, but neither of them appears in the list of "Default Programs" to be associated, which by itself smells of anomaly.
    Best regards.

  • Hello Paul,
Since my previous answer hereabove, I have been thinking... Let's try to to home in better on my file-program association problem with two or three simple questions:
    - When Studio 17 and MultiTerm were installed, why some, most *.sdlxxx file types were correctly associated with the related program and some, a few were not?
    - Why could I easily solve the problem regarding the MultiTerm files using the standard Windows procedure, whereas I could not do the same with three Studio file types?
    - When I try to apply this Windows procedure to -- let us say -- *.sdlxliff, I am invited to browse my computer to find the right program, but, when I click on SDLTradosStudio.exe in "C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio 5", nothing happens, ...Studio.exe is not added to the list of "usable" programs: why this failure if at the same step MultiTerm was normally added to the list?
With this additional information, can you think of a more focused solution proposal?
    Best regards.

  • Hello Gérard,

I think that if this doesn't work and if you have had problems before... and if you have tried the repairs etc. then you should log a support ticket as this is an installation issue. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    http://support.xl8.one

Just fill in the form and submit it. Make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

    Regards

    Paul
