(Ab)using Studio 2017 as a Proofreading Tool - autopropagation over segments with original text

I'm (ab)using Studio 2017 to proofread/review/edit German original texts which are in formats that don't otherwise allow the tracking of changes.
My deliverable is a DOCX with tracked changes, which the client then uses as a basis to implement my changes in the texts in their own tool.

Now what I would love to do, but I'm not sure that is possible:

I insert all source segments into target in the beginning with Alt+shift+insert. Then I start reading (totally ignoring the left hand side with the source). As soon as I've read a segment, I confirm it, and then I would like it to be autopropagated through the rest of the document.

But that somehow doesn't seem to work. Autopropagation only works if I refrain from copying the original text to all target segments. (But I can't skip that step, because if I do, that causes a lot of unwanted high "translation matches" beeing inserted when in fact all I want is the original. I then have to replace these high matches with the original text, which causes tracked changes that in fact are none, because the client doesn't have to do anything in these places.)

Note: I'm honestly not complaining about Studio here. I'm fully aware it was not designed for this ...

Apologies if this is awfully difficult to understand, but I'm happy to elaborate if necessary, and I'm hoping for Paul's natural curiosity to kick in :-)

To cut a long story short: What I need is autopropagation over segments into which original text was copied. Any chance to achieve this?

    I like the suggestion from Nora, but I think if it was me I'd do this instead.

    1. Add the source Word file you have for translation
    2. Translate it as normal, albeit you are actually reviewing the text by correcting in the target as a translation.   This way you get your autopropagation as normal as you are not using tracked changes
    3. Finally save the target file
    4. You now have a word source and a word target.  Use Word to compare the files and create a merged file with track changes

    That's probably what you need to give to your client and fairly straightforward I think.  Would that work?

    thanks for your suggestion, but if my source was Word, I would bypass Studio completely and simply work in Word with track changes on. The problem is that the file format is PPTX :-(

    But when I kept working on the day I posted this question, I figured out quite a few settings in the Options (Editor, AutoSuggest) that work way better for this type of job than my usual translation settings (which I hardly ever change).

    Can you think of anything that would allow saving and quickly switching between translation and proofreading settings?

    You can't do that with templates, can you? Neither is there a system of roles or different users, right? The best thing I can come up with is to use Studio 2015 for proofreading and tweaking its settings accordingly while doing translations in 2017.

  • I tried the PPTX compare function first, but it is awful for my purposes. It puts in a note (like a comment in Word) for every change. This might be feasible if you are interested in the content of a file and you want to make a couple of suggestions about  it, but it is totally useless if you make loads of strictly linguistic changes as I do. I had 506 changes in 25 pages of PPTX. Imagine 506 notes on 25 pages ... you simply can't process it.

    No, I mean that it would be ideal for me to have something like two user profiles (like "Eva" and "Éva" ...) with totally different settings under Options > Editor. There are so many checkmarks there that I have to change between a proofreading and a translation job that it would be great if I could somehow save and restore them. Otherwise I'll have to make screenshots of how the settings need to look for one job vs. the other and change back and forth between them manually which is a pain in the ass. (But again I'm not complaining because I'm fully aware I'm using Studio not as intended.)
