Real-time preview vs. embedded vs. packages

Question

I am still struggling to understand the workings of the real-time preview vs. embedded vs. Word (currently on Studio 2017). I prefer to use the side-by-side view in Word 2016 as the text appears just a little bit crisper (easier to review) and it responds faster than the 2010 real-time preview. I also have Word 2010 installed because I have found that I often cannot view xliffs created by clients in the Word 2016 preview. This is despite the fact that they are based docx files. Is there any way I can force Studio to use the Word 2016 preview for docx? If I uninstall Word 2010 then I get the error that my version of Word is incompatible.

Your problem is most likely that you do not have the full Professional version of office installed using the MSI installer. The problem is that Microsoft removed some of the components that all developers using a Word preview hook into making it impossible to achieve anymore unless they workaround it by using an html alternative. So we offer all the options and you will be able to use something at least. 
 
So the only way to "force" this to work the way you like is if you install the appropriate version of Microsoft office. This article perhaps explains a little more:

Perhaps the problem is related to the specific filetype used by your client to create the XLIFF. The realtime preview will only work with the new Word filetype for Studio.
