You can do it, easiest in alignment edit mode.  So if you select four segments like this:

Then click on the n:n icon and you'll get this:

When this is updated into your TM you'll have one TU like this:

You can also copy, cut and paste.  So splitting is achieved by just editing the text as you see fit.  There is no split function.

I will try, though I find it difficult to do without posting a picture. :) What I mean, in this wonderfult answer from Paul Filkin he posted a picture where we can see that each segment has a checkbox, so you can select segments for merging. In my case, in the default view I dont see those ckeckboxes. If I click to "Alignment edit mode", then these ckeckboxes appear, but they are grey, and I cannot select them.

Anyway, I see that I could solve my alignment problems in 2 ways: 1) "merge manaually": cut and paste text from source segments, 2) review carefully the source and target files before importing them for Trados alignment.
