Saved projects disappear from list in projects view (Studio 2017)

Hi everyone.

Every time I close Trados Studio 2017 Freelance, all saved projects disappear from in the list in the projects view. I also checked the filters. All filters (Status, Due Date, Type) are set to “Show all projects”. I understand that this is not a big deal, but it can at times be somewhat inconvenient.

If anyone knows how to solve this, please let me know. Thank you!

  • Do you work in a virtual machine?

The project list is stored under "Documents" for the user logged in Windows. So if you change the login, log as a different user or have problems accessing the Documents path in Windows, this may cause such behavior.

Check the path to Documents -> Studio 2017 -> Projects. There should be a current projects.xml. If not, check where the "projects.xml" is being stored and make sure it won't be deleted when you close Studio.

  • Thank you, Jerzy, for your quick reply!

To be completely honest, I am a bit confused about what information you might need to get a good picture of my situation. I will try witn the following:

I work with a physical machine (Windows 7 Professional), and I am the only user. Under Documents > Studio 2017, there is no "Projects" folder. The only folders under this path are: "AutoSave" and "Project Templates". However, there is a "projects.xml" file stored under Documents > SDL Trados Studio > Projects. This .xml file was last saved 8 days ago, although I worked on a project just this morning.

It would be great if you could let me know whether this makes sense and/or if you need any other information.
  • Hi Philipp,

Can you create a Project and then once you have done this right-click on the name of the project in the Projects View and select "Open Project Folder". This will take you into the project itself in Windows Explorer. Now navigate up one level to the folder above it and this is probably where your projects are being stored. What location is this?

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you for your interest in this. The location varies depending on the client. I create a separate folder for each of my projects and/or clients, i.e. the location would be something like C: > work > client A > project X. I just created a new project using the default storage settings. This project is stored under Documents > Studio 2017 > Projects.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I can save my projects and open them from where they are stored without any problems (just like the years before with Trados 2009). They are shown in the projects view and everything seems fine until I close Studio 2017. After reopening the application, the list is empty. I have searched the entire (I hope) application for "list settings" or "projects view settings" but could not find any. I have searched the internet and found several potential solutions. I have tried them all – without any success. I have uninstalled all components of the application (including the setup.exe file), downloaded the setup.exe file again, and reinstalled the application. I have even deleted the files "Settings.xml", “BaseSettings.xml”, “PluginCache.xml”, and “UserSettings.xml” from the folder C: > Users > (User Name) > AppData > Roaming > SDL > SDL Trados Studio > 14.0.0.0, and went through the entire setup process again. As a last resort, I have now reinstalled Trados 2017 with admin rights, but the list just keeps disappearing.

Any hint and/or solution would be much appreciated!

    Best,
    Philipp

  • Hello Philipp,

can you try running Studio as admin, and maybe also make sure it's been installed as admin. It starts to sound as though Studio just doesn't have permissions to write into the projects.xml, or maybe even to create the file in the first place.

If this doesn't help then I think you should log a support case. This can be achieved really quickly using this link and make sure you refer to this thread:

    http://support.xl8.one

Just fill in the form and submit it. Make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

  • Hi again Paul,

How did I manage to install the application as admin but not run it as admin as well?! The problem seems to be solved now. Running the application as admin has created (and updates) the Projects folder and projects.xml file under Documents > Studio 2017.

Thank you very much for your help with this!

    Best,
    Philipp
