New Translation Memory (Trial/Starter)

Hi everyone. I use the SDL Trados Trial Version, and want to know whether this version allows me to create and send a Translation Memory (TM) of the XLIFF file sent by a client. Said client did not share a TM of his own (no package, only XLIFF), although he wants me to send back the resulting TM of such work along with the translated XLIFF. I am also about to buy the Starter Version once my Trial is dated, and wonder whether I'd be able to create and send TMs to this type of clients using the Starter vol.

  • Hi Daniel,

First of all, do you mean SDLXLIFF or XLIFF? If they sent you an SDLXLIFF then they really do not need your TM at all as they can recreate it from the SDLXLIFF. If it's an XLIFF then I presume they have some means of opening this in a CAT tool or the TM won't be of much use, and if they can do this then they should also be able to create a TM from the XLIFF too in whatever tools they use.

Secondly, the answer to your question regarding Starter is that it's not possible unless your XLIFF is less than 5,000 TUs and you are able to provide the SDLTM. You need Freelance and above to be able to do more.  You can do this with the trial as this is in effect the Professional Version.

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks a lot for your help. It was the SDLXLIFF file what the client sent me, indeed. My apologies for the confusion. He categorically pointed out what he needs the translated SDLXLIFF as well the resulting TM. I want to highlight here that this client did not share any TM of his own, nor any other file but the SDLXLIFF file for that matter.

I assume the Trial Version is still able to do this, but not quite sure though.

    Good things!
  • Hi Daniel,

Yes, the trial can of course allow you to convert your sdlxliff to a TM. But really, this is absolutely unnecessary, and in fact the sdlxliff can be better than a TM, especially an approved sdlxliff.

What you have to do is this:

    1. Open the sdlxliff (or just use the one in your project already)
    2. Create a new TM, an empty one
    3. Enable this new TM for update
    4. Run the batch task to update the TM

    or.

    1. Create a new TM, an empty one
    2. In the TM Maintenance View import your sdlxliff into the new TM

    Regards
