64-bit version of Studio

Please create a 64-bit version of Studio. At present only a 32-bit version is available, and therefore it can theoretically only access 2-3GB of system memory, meaning that upgrading your machine with more memory then this does not have any beneficial impact on Studio performance.

When handling large files & projects, allowing Studio access to all of your system's memory would make a huge difference in time and performance, and for this the app needs to be 64-bit.

Are there any plans to release a 64-bit version in future?

  • Any updates on the plans to introduce the 64-bit edition?

  • A 64-bit upgrade would indeed be most welcome. Studio has been updating from a bilingual file for review since this morning 9.30 am CET and still hasn't finished. This means our machine will have been blocked for a whole working day for one task only :-(

Companies usually tend to take advantage of new technologies rather than sticking to old systems… The least SDL could do is propose both options like other software companies do.

I assume it is more tempting to release "new" paid features than actually improving the software, or even fixing basic problems that have been present for ages. Studio is by far the slowest program of all programs I use, yet it clearly isn't the most powerful/intensive one. Besides, not a single program on my computers produces as many crashes as Studio.

It seems proposing a new, 64-bit version just isn't profitable enough…

  • I assume we have web stats on customer Windows versions (32- v 64-bit). My guess is that there are still a lot of individual users worldwide who are still on older h/w, OS or MS Office. Could the main development branch move to 64-bit, and keep the 32-bit version alive in a maintenance mode with a sunset of 2 years?

  • I'd say it's necessary for translators working on very big SDLXLIFF (multiple at once), mostly generated from XML's with embedded content. In the past I've sat down with some translators of the Dutch NWO and watched the memory usage and crashing of Studio because of it.  I think it's time Studio (and also the TMS workers) are upgraded to 64bit to remove the 32bit memory addressing limit.
