Termbase lookup : only display a source term when I click on it

Dear Trados Studio developers,

Regarding term recognition in the editor, there used to be a great feature in the Workbench (yes, that was a long time ago!): you could simply click on the red line above a term and the termbase recognition panel would instantly show that term (only that term, not all terms). This was one of the best features of the Workbench, and then... it disappeared.

The current approach, which is to display ALL terms in a segment, is very time-consuming when you have a very large termbase [50000+ terms]: it usually takes several seconds to display, which is really disproportionate, and what's more, the term recognition panel starts from the 1st term in the source segment, followed by many, many terms (can be 30) where you have to find the term you are looking for (by the way, the hotkey for "term search" doesn't help, as there is a bug in this feature).

I just hope that someone will read my prose...

Thanks!
Olivier

  • Hi all,

I have deleted everything I wrote because it seems to be upsetting so many people.

In all my years beta testing since Studio and MultiTerm were first created and before, I don't remember angering anyone before.

BTW I don't work for RWS, I'm just a user who happens to be fortunate enough to have had no problems in all these years that I couldn't resolve with or without help.

    All the best to all

  • Dear Alison,

It would have been nice to ask before "deleting evertyhing". There were interesting ideas in my suggestions and we could all have edited our thread to soften our discussion and leaving the good ideas for reference...

    Have a nice day.

  •

    Thanks Adam

You didn't include Olivier's longer post.

However, Olivier, I have found a copy of it that I didn't know I'd made. Would you like me to post it here or to send it to you privately, so you can use it to post again?

    All the best,

    Ali Smiley

  • Thank you all.

I'm glad to see that my idea is getting a lot of interest from the community. Wink

Alison : I've kept a copy of my long post explaining my idea in detail. I'll cut out all the useless (and controversial) information and make it shorter this weekend. I'll also read your posts carefully and with great interest and add any ideas that might be missing from my long post. But basically it said: "Reintroduce the good idea from the Workbench, i.e. clicking on the red line above a term makes the matches of that term only appear in the term recognition panel (having all the terms being displayed would not be the default behaviour in order to speed-up the editor)".

Have a nice day. Good vibes! Smiley

  • Dear Paul,

Thank you for that short but clear synthesis of the expressed needs regarding the term recognition features.

    1) Instant Term Display: responds to my first idea (and my original need): that's perfect. (I have no idea how much software development this would require, but from a user's point of view, this would be a major step forward, imho).

    2) Segment Scroll Feature: considering my need, this would be a second best option (but if it's easier to implement than the first option, it's really worth it).

    3) Enhanced Term Information Display: I support this suggestion 100%.

    4) Image Display in Termbase Window: not a priority for me, but I support the proposal.

    5) Consistency in Term Display: I have also noticed some strange behaviour of this kind: sometimes some words are highlighted with a red line in the source segment, but are not listed in the term recognition window. It's rare though.

    6) Beta Testing for Community Feedback: great idea.

    Thanks again.

PS See also my answer to   's suggestion about the Display When Hovering feature.

  • Dear Burim,

I'm not so fond of pop-up windows opening when hovering over the red highlighted terms. I have so many terms in my TB that those windows would pop up all the time like popcorn in a pan Smile. But it could be implemented as an optional feature in addition to (not instead of) the "Instant Term Display" (from Paul's list).

    All the best.
