Problems when trying to deactivate my license

When opening SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance Plus a pop-up window warns about an error when trying to recover the license. One of the options is "off-line deactivation" but after trying to generate the certificate I get another error message "Cannot deactivate license". Please I need help with this as I've been struggling several days with this issue.

  • Dear Support team/Communty/Moderators,

Need help quite urgently as I cannot work on my Trados at the moment!  When openning Trados this Deactivation mesage appears (I cannot open the software and work as I want currently...), so I was trying to follow this deactivation prompt (in order to reactivate it again afrerwards). So when I'm also trying to deactivate it wouldn't let me as the following message appears when trying this offline deactivation (the online one seems not accessible on the site for me as well) and generation of the certificate:

SDL Trados Studio 2014 Product Activation window showing an error message 'An error occurred while retrieving your license.' with a deactivate button below.>Product Activation window with instructions to generate a deactivation certificate, showing an activation code and a greyed out 'Generate Certificate' button.>Error message pop-up over the Product Activation window stating 'Offline deactivation failed. Cannot deactivate license.' with additional instructions.

Please let me know what I should do here to deactive and then reactivate it again (either offline or online).

I have some ongoing projects at the moment. so I would really appreciate your prompt support.

Let me know if you need any further details for me to help me asap. Thank you in advance!

    Sincerely,

    Alex

  • Hello

You could try to download and install Studio 2022 which should work in Trial mode for 30 days: https://downloadcentercdn.sdl.com/TP/Trados/T2022/Studio/CUs/CU4/TradosStudio2022_CU4_13209.zip

This way you can continue work on your projects. If you decide to upgrade / buy a 2022 license you need to contact a Sales person: https://www.trados.com/contact/chat.html

    Thank you,

    Sorin

  • Dear Sorin,

Yes, thank you for your suggestion, it seems like using a trial 30 days version is an urgent solution which will help with my client, but this is a temporary solution for a more general issue - since I didn't plan at the moment to purchase newer version of Trados (maybe in the future), which was working fine until now -you can also see that on my SDL RWS account there is no expiry date for my license:

SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance Plus license information showing 1 user, 1 in use, 0 available, 0 extra activations, and no expiry date.

So there must also be a way to continue using the product without making me buy a new SDL version...

I really hope there is an appropriate solution for this issue. Thank you in advance!

    Please let me know.

    Sincerely,

    Alex

That's true, and you have the right to continue using it for as long as you like.  But there is no obligation on our part to support it after the end of life of the product.  The responsibility for maintaining the licence on your computer is yours.

So if you have lost it then I'm afraid your only option, if you wish to continue working with Trados Studio, is to purchase a new version of Trados Studio.

  • Hello Paul,

Nice to meet you and thank you for your quick response. The license was always active - I worked on an important project previously and when opened Trados again today to create a return package/retrieve the project's files and send it to my client - I received these messages... and I'm stuck at the moment.

Thank you for your help in advance!

I hope this issue is resolved soon before the weekend, otherwise we can continue next week.

    Wishing you a nice Thanksgiving!

    Sincerely,

    Alex

Nice to meet you too.  There is nothing to continue however unless you purchase a new licence.  Maybe I wasn't clear enough with this?

  • Thank you for your reply again Paul! I haven't yet installed the new Trados as i didn't want to do anything in a rush before the weekend - especially since there were projects that were almost finished - so I informed the client about it and they are waiting.

I would like continue now and possibly install the new trial version you suggested as it seems that SDL doesn't leave me any other option... but anyway, since I've been in the middle of the client's project on Trados 2014 - I would like to make sure that when I install the new version I will still have access to them.

    Let me know,

    Alex

Studio projects are not hidden, they are just files in a folder. So you have several options, but I would recommend you recreate your project because Studio 2014 is so old the filetype support won't be there and even though you will be able to finish the project you probably won't be able to save the target files.  If it's a project package then you should be fine as your customer will do that from the return package but if you created the project yourself then you may have a problem.

Not the end of the world though... just do this:

    1. create a new project in Studio 2022
    2. add the TM you used in 2014 for this project
    3. pre-translate your files
    4. polish up any minor differences
    5. save your target files

If you don't have the TM then create a new one for this project in 2022 and import the sdlxliff files from your 2014 project to it.

  • Hello Paul,

It was a package I received and worked with (and was about to create a return pakage). The package/one of the files in the package which I finished editing and saved it, and it was about to be finalized in Trados 2014. But then the issue I explained previously happened and I couldn't access it anymore. I didn't had or created any TM... I was a lot of work and if there are any differences and you say that I would probably need to go over and rework everything (in case the old package format differs...)  - this would be very unfortunate - it sound like now I will both need to pay for the new version and rework the whole thing :(
