Error 1603 when installing and updating Studio 2015 / 2015 SR2 after Windows 10 migration

Hi everyone,

I'm dealing with a big issue when trying to install and/or update my version of SDL Trados Studio 2015, and I hope someone can help me resolve it.

Everything started when SDL Trados 2015 SR2 became available. I downloaded the updates from my account, and proceeded to install them as usual.
Unfortunately, the installation can't go through, displaying a "Could not find network location TT" error message.
All I can do then is abort the installation, which shows a 1603 error message.

I have kept working with my standard version, but since I had some free time a couple of days ago, I decided to give this another try.
As per instructions found in the SDL KB, I thought uninstalling my current version of Trados would help.
Except it really DIDN'T, and I received the same error messages when I tried to reinstall it.
So I was left with no software at all...

I have tried several "turnarounds" from the knowledge base, but none really helped with my case.

In the end, I was somehow able to manually reinstall the standard (as in non updated) version of Studio 2015, using the tips from this KB producthelp.sdl.com/.../9136.html (I had to run the individual MSI files as administrator first, by adding the related command in the Windows registry).

I am now back to square one, using the non updated version of Trados 2015.
The problem is I'm not sure my manual installation will be stable over time, and I can't update the softwares I paid for.
(I haven't tried updating Multiterm, but I'm afraid the results will be the same).

Perhaps this is important to mention I have recently migrated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, since this seems to be a MSI/Windows installer problem.
Although, this is the only software I had trouble with since migrating.

Has anyone been confronted to this issue?

Thanks for your help,
Flavien

  • Ok, this means the uninstaller fails because it doesn't find the folder it needs.

Can you try to install this component, which should create the folder and if it was successful, uninstall it again?

    Walter
  • Let me add that this folder is also created by the "SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module", so - unless you uninstalled that module - you should have this folder.

What happens when you run "Studio 2015 - Remove suite of products"? Does this also fail?

  • Hi Walter,

Thanks to your advice, I finally have some good news.
It took several steps before I got everything working again. Let me explain:

    - I grabbed an old Trados 2007 installer which placed on my system "SDL Trados 2007" and "SDL Trados Synergy" (I rejected the Java installation process because obviously I had a more recent one).

    - After I restarted the system, I tried to uninstall "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007", but it still crashed with the same error message.

    - I noticed then that the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" was still absent from my system, but I did find the following "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007\TT".
I copied/pasted this folder in order to create
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" (content included).

    - At this step, I was finally able to uninstall "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007".

    - I restarted my computer and then proceeded to uninstall "SDL Trados 2007" and "SDL Trados Synergy".

    - After restarting again, I simply ran the full installers for Studio 2015 SR2 and Multiterm SR2. Both installed succesfully and removed the old 2015 versions from my system. Everything seems OK now. Which is really great!!
"SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module" is also back in Programs and Features.

Now, is it safe to delete the following folders, or are they still going to be used?
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\Installers\FileFilterFormatUpdate"

In order to avoid further issues, should I also uninstall SDLX, provided that Studio 2015 can process older file types?
(I have "SDLX" listed in Programs and Features with a blank icon (v. 9.2.7035), which I think corresponds to the "SDL Edit" module. A translation agency I've been working with asked me to install this a while ago in order to work with their TTXs).
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\SDLX Lite"

    Thanks and best regards,
    Flavien
  • Hi, glad you got it sorted, a repair of the FFU may have solved it also.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007" is where we store the trados components these days so dont delete that :)
You can proabably uninstall SDLX and SDLX lite, if you need them in the future I can find them to send to you.

Once you have uninstalled you can manually clean up those extra folders if they are still there.

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for the details. I won't touch the folder you mentionned then, but can I remove those two?
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\Installers\FileFilterFormatUpdate"

It would be nice if you could you send me SDLX before I uninstall it. I'm scared of messing up everything again :)

    Best regards,
    Flavien
