Error 1603 when installing and updating Studio 2015 / 2015 SR2 after Windows 10 migration

Hi everyone,

I'm dealing with a big issue when trying to install and/or update my version of SDL Trados Studio 2015, and I hope someone can help me resolve it.

Everything started when SDL Trados 2015 SR2 became available. I downloaded the updates from my account, and proceeded to install them as usual.
Unfortunately, the installation can't go through, displaying a "Could not find network location TT" error message.
All I can do then is abort the installation, which shows a 1603 error message.

I have kept working with my standard version, but since I had some free time a couple of days ago, I decided to give this another try.
As per instructions found in the SDL KB, I thought uninstalling my current version of Trados would help.
Except it really DIDN'T, and I received the same error messages when I tried to reinstall it.
So I was left with no software at all...

I have tried several "turnarounds" from the knowledge base, but none really helped with my case.

In the end, I was somehow able to manually reinstall the standard (as in non updated) version of Studio 2015, using the tips from this KB producthelp.sdl.com/.../9136.html (I had to run the individual MSI files as administrator first, by adding the related command in the Windows registry).

I am now back to square one, using the non updated version of Trados 2015.
The problem is I'm not sure my manual installation will be stable over time, and I can't update the softwares I paid for.
(I haven't tried updating Multiterm, but I'm afraid the results will be the same).

Perhaps this is important to mention I have recently migrated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, since this seems to be a MSI/Windows installer problem.
Although, this is the only software I had trouble with since migrating.

Has anyone been confronted to this issue?

Thanks for your help,
Flavien

You mention that you finally managed to install Studio 2015 SR2, but that you now cannot update the software. Why not?
If you have managed to install Studio 2015 SR2 and can launch it, then you simply need to run the upgrade to CU4 by going to "Help - Check for updates".

    Did you try this?

  • Dear Walter,

    Thanks for your reply.
    Sorry if I wasn't clear.
The only thing I managed to do is recover my non updated version of Trados 2015 (not SR2) by manually reinstalling each msi file as an administrator.
If I try to reinstall Trados 2015 or to install Trados 2015 SR2 the normal way, by using the installer, it doesn't work and I get the same errors that crash the installation process. Same problem with Multiterm.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Dave,

    Thanks for your reply.
I don't remember where I got this utility from in the first place. But since I have worked as a vendor for SDL France, it's possible I received this from a project manager or downloaded it from their FTP.

Anyway, I don't have Trados 2007 installed, but I still have SDLX. Do you think it's still safe to uninstall this "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite"?
I still receive projects in TTX format that I process in Studio 2015 (some agencies keep working with obsolete versions of Trados), I'm just keeping SDLX in case Studio 2015 can't open them.
But then, I don't know if Studio 2015 is able to open them only because I have these installed, or if it's a native feature, in which case I can probably uninstall SDLX as well?

Also, seems I can't find the "SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module" in Programs and features. Maybe because I had to install the MSIs manually since the silent install couldn't go through.
The Trados related programs displayed in my Programs and features are: (sorry for the long list)

    - ApSIC Xbench Plugin for SDL Trados Studio
    - File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite
    - Memu Maker for SDL Trados Studio 2014
    - SDL Trados 2014 SP2 - Remove suite of products
    - SDL Trados 2015 SR2 - Remove suite of products
    - SDL Trados Studio 2014 - MadCap Filter
    - SDL Trados Studio 2014 - SubRip Filter
    - SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP2
    - SDL Trados Studio 2015
    - SDL WorldServer Components
    - SDLTmConvert
    - SDLTmReverseLangs
    - SDLX
    - TMX File Type version 1.0
+ all the MultiTerm and Passolo related programs/modules

Apart from the "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite", can you point out which element I should uninstall?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Flavien
  • Hi,
the "SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module" is an msi that actually has parts of sdlx and trados 2007 in it, to allow studio to work with this file types, and now is the only way these components are updated so it will have later bugfixed versions than in the "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite" so it should be safe to uninstall and replace with the latest "SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module" in the SR2 installer.

it seems though that you dont have it installed currently (if your list is accurate) so your current studio 2014 and 2015 installs may not handle these files properly or be using older versions from the FFFU.

I would uninstall "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite" and either install Studio 2014 or 2015 again from the full installer.

  • Hi Dave,

When trying to uninstall the File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007 Suite from Programs and Features, I get the same message error as in the attempt to install Trados from the installer:
    "Impossible d'accéder à l'emplacement réseau TT."

So I can't remove it this way. I probably will have to modify this in Regedit?

  • Flavien

I guess this "TT" refers to the folder "c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" of the 2007 Workbench software.

Could it be that you deleted this folder or that your current user doesn't have any rights on it, which would be the reason why you can't uninstall it.

Can you check whether this folder still exists?

    Walter

  • Hi Walter,

Seems you're right, as this folder is mentionned in my chainer logs.
It does not exist on my system.
    I manually created the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" folder/path, but it didn't help, probably cause it's empty.

    Best regards,
    Flavien
  • Ok, this means the uninstaller fails because it doesn't find the folder it needs.

Can you try to install this component, which should create the folder and if it was successful, uninstall it again?

    Walter
  • Let me add that this folder is also created by the "SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module", so - unless you uninstalled that module - you should have this folder.

What happens when you run "Studio 2015 - Remove suite of products"? Does this also fail?

    Walter
  • Hi Walter,

Thanks to your advice, I finally have some good news.
It took several steps before I got everything working again. Let me explain:

    - I grabbed an old Trados 2007 installer which placed on my system "SDL Trados 2007" and "SDL Trados Synergy" (I rejected the Java installation process because obviously I had a more recent one).

    - After I restarted the system, I tried to uninstall "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007", but it still crashed with the same error message.

    - I noticed then that the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" was still absent from my system, but I did find the following "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007\TT".
I copied/pasted this folder in order to create
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007\TT\" (content included).

    - At this step, I was finally able to uninstall "File Format Filter Update for SDLTrados 2007".

    - I restarted my computer and then proceeded to uninstall "SDL Trados 2007" and "SDL Trados Synergy".

    - After restarting again, I simply ran the full installers for Studio 2015 SR2 and Multiterm SR2. Both installed succesfully and removed the old 2015 versions from my system. Everything seems OK now. Which is really great!!
"SDL Trados Legacy Compatibility Module" is also back in Programs and Features.

Now, is it safe to delete the following folders, or are they still going to be used?
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\Installers\FileFilterFormatUpdate"

In order to avoid further issues, should I also uninstall SDLX, provided that Studio 2015 can process older file types?
(I have "SDLX" listed in Programs and Features with a blank icon (v. 9.2.7035), which I think corresponds to the "SDL Edit" module. A translation agency I've been working with asked me to install this a while ago in order to work with their TTXs).
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\SDLX Lite"

    Thanks and best regards,
    Flavien
  • Hi, glad you got it sorted, a repair of the FFU may have solved it also.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SDL\T2007" is where we store the trados components these days so dont delete that :)
You can proabably uninstall SDLX and SDLX lite, if you need them in the future I can find them to send to you.

Once you have uninstalled you can manually clean up those extra folders if they are still there.

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for the details. I won't touch the folder you mentionned then, but can I remove those two?
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\T2007"
    - "C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\Installers\FileFilterFormatUpdate"

It would be nice if you could you send me SDLX before I uninstall it. I'm scared of messing up everything again :)

    Best regards,
    Flavien
