Multiterm 2017 no longer working after major crash of Studio

Hello all,

I have Studio and Multiterm 2017 latest updates and everything worked like a train.

But 2 days ago Studio crashed out of the blue, and since then:

-Multiterm in the Editor does not show terms or not all the terms

-No more autosuggest, so typing is now twice as slow for me

-At first after opening the Editor I can add terms, but after half an hour get the error message: Multiterm is unable to add the term

I have Windows 10.0 makersupdate. I noticed that the Java Control Panel has no tab 'Updates'.

I was wondering is this a Java problem or should I maybe reinstall MultiTerm?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi

First of all, open MultiTerm and allow it to update to the latest version (if you don't have this function set to perform automatically on startup, go to Help > Update.

Then, please try running a Windows Repair of MultiTerm - and then of Studio - via Control Panel.

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados MultiTerm 2017 SR1 Desktop) and click Repair.
    4. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.
I actually repair all 4 components of MultiTerm periodically - Desktop, Core, Convert and Word Integration. Then I repair Studio. It's worth the time it takes, especially after a Windows automatic update.

Also, do you know how to reorganise a termbase? Studio and MultiTerm normally prompt for this if it's required when the affected termbase is in use. Periodically reorganising helps the termbase run more smoothly.

This is done by opening the termbase in MultiTerm, click on Termbase Management bottom left then select Reorganise in the top toolbar. Click through the Wizard (OK > Next > Finish > Close) then close MultiTerm

If none of the above helps, then a reset of both MultiTerm and Studio (after trying the above Windows Repair of both) might also help:

Navigate via Windows Explorer to the folder shown below and rename the folder 'MultiTerm14' - anything, add 'old' for example, doesn't matter...

    C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm
You may need to make hidden folders visible first, which is done on the View tab of Windows Explorer:
Windows Explorer window showing the SDL MultiTerm folder with subfolders and files including MultiTerm1, MultiTerm2, and VersionManager.xml.
Once you've renamed the MultiTerm14 folder, restart MultiTerm 2017 and open a termbase and the folder you've renamed will be recreated. You can delete the old one.
    C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

    Delete the following 3 files:
    BaseSettings.xml
    Plugincache.xml
    UserSettings.xml

Then open Studio. The folders will be recreated when you close Studio and have recustomised your settings. I know this bit is a pain but it's good to go through the settings and tweak them now and then to make sure you have it set up to the optimum for whatever you are doing. Also to be sure Studio hasn't got reset to default by a Windows update or whatever.

If you're still experiencing problems, you can go deeper in the resetting, as follows:

C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Local\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio and ProjectApi folder
C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio and ProjectApi folder
C:\Users\[User_Name]\Documents\Studio [VERSION] - rename the Studio [VERSION folder to Studio [VERSION]_Old

Then open Studio and all the above folders will be recreated as default.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Alison

  • Hello Alison,

It's so kind of you to take all that time to give me all these tips.
I never knew this, about Repair and reorganizing etc.
I knew about the .xml settings files and use it always when Studio no longer works.

I will try it all out later, today I have no time due to a deadline, and let you know if it worked.

    Best,
    Akke
  • Hi

At the top of the termbase window you'll see a little dropdown arrow to the right at the top. Left-click and this dropdown menu appears:

Dropdown menu in Trados Studio Termbase Viewer showing layout options with 'Default layout' highlighted.

Some other users are saying that the list is switching back to Flags layout when adding a term, which is probably what you are describing. You can re-select Default layout, which is the new layout I expect you want, by left-clicking on it in the list.

Show this to the person who contacts you from Help, maybe they have a solution to it now.

Let me know if so as it's happening to me as well, though not all the time ;-)

One user suggested it was the individual termbases affecting each other when more than one termbase was open in a project. Whatever causes it, it shouldn't happen and I'm sure the wonderful chaps at SDL are doing their best to change this behaviour...

You can select any of these display preferences when you have a termbase open in MultiTerm itself, too.

    Hope this helps,

    Ali :)

  • Hello Alison,

Thanks for that. I didn't know that there was a choice. It works, no more problems with that.

But SDL contacted me and asked if I had the problem of no terms showing up with all termbases.
I said no, actually I only have it with specific files in a specific project. So they said they could no longer help me.
I think I must raise a new Question, unless of course you would know the answer.
It is a very weird problem:15 segments everything normal, then 16th segment no terms, while I am sure at least one term in the source is in the termbase... Then the segments after that everything ok. And so it repeats, in cycles.
PS I updated Java to newest version.

Let me know what you know, otherwise I raise a Question.

  • Hello Alison,

Good news. I realized that I had forgotten about reorganizing the termbase. I just did it and now all segments show up!!!
Thumbs up for you, you helped me so much!

    Akke
  • In hindsight I think I had to re-install right after the crash when nothing was working.
But the remaining problems of termbase half working was due to non-maintenance of the termbase.
A very good tip because I have seen this problem passing by here, Terms not showing up in all segments...
So this is the solution for that.
  • Hi Akke,

That's excellent! I'm so glad it's all sorted now! I was going to suggest turning off the LookAhead feature under File > Options > Editor > Automation as that can sometimes slow down term recognition.

Anyway, I'm very glad I could help,
    All the best,
    Ali
  • Hi Alison,

I am still having another problem now, with that same termbase window that I have now in Default View, which works fine.
However, when a term is double, it asks me: do you want to merge the entries? But I can only click on one thing, no longer Yes or No, and I don't see what I click because it is outside my screen limit (before, the Yes and No where also but I could guess) and so I click in the invisible field and then: "Duplicating entry." and I have 2 separate entries that are not merged...

    Best,
    Akke
  • Hi ,

Do you mean that the dialog asking if you wish to merge the term with an existing one is not fully visible? I am experiencing the same - but only sometimes. The dialog is hidden inside the termbase window. Very odd!

This is only happening since the last Cumulative Update, I think.

Is anyone else experiencing this odd behaviour? Is it a known issue, ?

    All the best,

    Ali :)

  • Well the dialog was 90% hidden before but I could sense somehow left was Yes and right was No.
But now, after the 'crash' and reinstall, the hidden dialog offers me one option, which I cannot read, but the mouse is active, and when I click it, it says 'Duplicated terms' instead of merging the terms.
  • Hi ,

That is bizarre. I have tried to reproduce this scenario and cannot. My 'Add term' and 'Quick add term' functions are working fine now however I access them (via Ctrl+F2, Ctrl+Shift+F2 or from the dropdown list via right-click). I have tried doing it after various previous actions and nothing reproduces the oversized dialog that was occurring within the Termbase viewer in my Studio Editor screen.

Has anyone else experienced this behaviour:

When wishing to add a second term to an existing termbase entry 'on the fly' (i.e. while working in the Editor window of Studio), the dialog that should appear in front of the Editor pane is as follows:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a dialog box titled 'Selected Term Already Exists' with an information icon and message stating 'The selected term 'Armatur' already exists in the active termbase. Would you like to edit the existing term?' with options 'Yes', 'No', and 'Cancel'.

However, Akke and I have both experienced a message appearing, instead, INSIDE the termbase viewer window across the term access pane. It seems to have stopped for me but Akke is now experiencing this without the usual Yes/No choice appearing but one single option.

One can only see the top of the dialog because it is in large font...

In the meantime, Akke, have you tried a Windows Repair again on Studio and MultiTerm since this started to happen? If this is happening after you have reinstalled then you could contact the Installation and Licensing Help Team as I said in a previous post in this thread, for free-of-charge help here:

    Installation and Licensing Help

Fill out all the details then click 'Submit Case'. Most importantly, give them the email you are contactable on accurately and select 'Installation' under 'Case Type'

I'm not sure if they are there over the weekend but they do get back to you pretty quickly once they're there.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

    Ali :)

  • Hello Alison,

This occured right after clean re-install of both Studio and MultiTerm.
I didn't have time then to pay attention to it because I was glad that all was working again.
But I will contact the Help Team for this, good suggestion!

Have a good rest of the weekend also.
