OK, all fixed, thanks to an answer from Alison Field to a completely different question (https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/f/91/t/17259)!

The fix was this (just showing the lines from her solution that applied to my problem):

1. Close all SDL applications.
2. Open the Control Panel.
3. Go to Programs and Features.
4. Right-click SDL Trados MultiTerm 2017 SR1 Core and click Repair.
5. Restart MultiTerm.

Why this was necessary is anybody's guess, but all's well that ends well.

I'm glad that you were able to find an answer on the Community even without any of us actually replying to you. I was travelling so didn't see your post.

Windows Repair is designed to smooth out software malfunctions that could be caused by software  updates or installation of a new piece of software for example. The correct functionality of any complex software can be subject to interference from other software or from the operating system itself - especially after a big update whether it's the software itself, another piece of software or Windows itself.
