Multiterm (Studio 2017) freezing/crashing when trying to add new term. No error messages. Reinstalled, did not sole the problem.

Multiterm (Studio 2017) freezing/crashing when trying to add new term, then stopped working. There were no error messages, it just kept freezing every time I wanted to add a new term, then it stopped launching altogether (and still no error messages). I reinstalled it and I am having the exact same problem. I have given my antivirus and firewall additional permissions in case that could be the problem, but it does not seem to solve anything. Anyone experiencing the same or who can help?

Thanks!

  • Hello Steve,

thank you for the fast reply.

This is the error I get when trying to open the term base in MultiTerm:

Screenshot of SDL MultiTerm with an error dialog box stating 'An error occurred while parsing EntityName. Line 1, position 138.'

    Studio is at version 2017 SR1 - 14.1.10012.29730,

    MultiTerm  is at verision 2017 SR1 - 14.2.6.23639

The check for updates does not offer anything new, I presume it was updated to the last available version by the Microsoft Repair function.

So far, the problem persists, I'll try the other steps ...

  • Hello Andrea Schultheiß (AndreaSchultheiß) ,

You can post the full error stack if you click on the blue disc icon (in the error message) and then post this into the community.
We can then see the full error- which often helps determine the problem.

  • Step by step, I have tried everything you suggested, except for resetting both applications (have to get hold of the license account manager to download the app).
I'm sorry to report that at first, it works well and terms can be added from Studio or Multiterm, but after 5 or 6 add actions in either application, I only see the "busy" symbol (no error message) and I have to end the application via Windows Task Manager.
To me, it seems that something is "accumulating" in the background and then the application is blocked.
  • Hello

    As you say-

Then maybe as a workaround removing the ampersands (&) could do the trick.

  • Hello Steven,

I changed the name of the termbase and replaced the ampersand by an underscore.
The bug is still alive and kicking. You are welcome to have a copy of the termbase files, if that is any help.
    Thank you for your assistance,
    :-)

  • I have both Studio and MultiTerm up to date. I could solve my MultiTerm issue yesterday by uninstalling the latest update (SR1) and then it worked like a charm as a standalone (started to show the object not referenced error when used in Trados). But today I am experiencing issues with Trados itself even without any termbases open - I cannot add files to a project. There is an error that says "Cannot validate SDL plugin". This is getting so tiring.
  • The only thing that worked for me was: go to Control Panel>Programs>View Installed Updates>Uninstall Cumulative Update for Multiterm (scroll down a bit, it will be there). Multiterm will ask you to update to the latest when you open it, just ignore it. It will crash EVERY time I update and I have tried it multiple times in three different machines with three different versions of Windows.
  • This was an easy fix though:

I just went to plug-ins in Trados and unchecked WIP report. It is just extremely frustrating that these things keep happening and it is SO obscure for the user - you have taken absolutely no action and these issues come up out of the blue.

In case anyone is having the same issues with Multiterm 2017: uninstall cumulative update! :(
