MultiTerm has never been installed..

Hi. Please bear with me as I am still learning how to use TRADOS like a beginner.

When I installed TRADOS Studio 2014 last year, I thought I had done all but I just recently realised MultiTerm has never been installed

(well, I thought MultiTerm would be automatically installed when you install TRADOS..). So I tried open MultiTerm sample file in SDL MultiTerm file,

It said "Windows can't open this file".  Do I have to download a new programme for installing MultiTerm or is there any other way? I am completely lost in

what I did wrong at the time of installation so I need someone patient to guide me though this! BTW, I don't have a Canon printer.

Any help is highly appreciated.

  • Multiterm Desktop is a separate program and you also have to install it separately. Go to your SDL user account, to the area "Downloads" and download the installer for" SDL Multiterm 2014 Desktop" and run it. Once this has been done, you can then use Multiterm Desktop.

P.S.: Note that the core components required to use termbases from within Studio are already installed with Studio. This means that you can open existing termbases (such as the "Sample"  termbase you mentioned) from Studio without installing Multiterm Desktop. You will however need Multiterm Desktop in order top create your own termbases and for import/export and maintenance functions.

  • Hi, Walter.
Thank you for your reply! I've managed to install MultiTerm but it seems I still have some teething problems.

I have created a termbase and inserted a few words. It is recognised in "Term Recognition" box but drop-down list still doesn't appear unless I use short cut key (Ctrl+Shift+L). What am I missing?

And I have several existing translated files already and I wish to enter words from those files into newly created termbases.
Do I have to enter each word manually or I can batch-task for that?
  • Hi Miki

There is no automatic drop-down list appearing. When Studio recognizes that a term from the termbase appears in the source segment, it shows this by displaying a red line above the recognized term and showing the term in the term recognition window.

You then have three options to insert the translation of the term into the target segment:

    (1) Hit CTRL-Shift-L

    (2) Click on the second icon in the Term recognition window

    (3) While typing your target text, type the first correct letter of the term, this will trigger AutoSuggest (provided it is activated, which is the default) and show a drop-down list with the terms from the termbase on top and the results from the AutoSuggest dictionary below.  Simply, select the appropriate entry using the arrow keys and hit Enter.

    (3) is the fastest and most efficient way.

If you have a properly formatted Excel sheet with these terms, you can use Multiterm Convert to create a Mutliterm import file, which you then import into your termbase. Alternatively, you could use the Open Exchange app "Glossary Converter" to create a termbase from this Excel, then export it and import the export file into your already existing main termbase. Make sure that your termbase definitions match.
