MultiTerm Widget bar malfunction

Dear Community,

there are two issues related to Multiterm and MultiTerm Widget I would like to reopen, since the threads available here do not solve my doubts.

1. "MultiTerm is included for free, and will be available to download from your RWS Account, when you purchase any Trados Studio license". This is what we find on the RWS page. However, I am not so sure about the Widget viewer. Is it linked to MultiTerm or can be it be installed on a "non-translator´s" computer and used to search (only search and view) the terminology from a TDB in some shared location?

2.  Widget gives me a lot of trouble, it doesn´t search the words that I know I personnaly saved to the TDB. Is there any solution? Maybe the 2022 version?

Thank you in advance!

It is a tool specifically designed to work without MultiTerm.  Maybe this article will help?

Is the termbase saved on your local drive, or in MultiTerm Server (the application and not just a termbase you placed on a network drive to share).

Dear Paul!!! Have read  the article, absolutely brilliant in terms of style and the way you explain the concepts!!!!

As for the MultiTerm Widget, the idea of sharing our database with the rest of the company occured to me because I was 100% sure that Multiterm is a stand alone app. And free. So I asked one of the colleagues (an engineer) to collaborate. He requested the installation of this app, and the IT department installed him Multiterm+Widget (1-month trial version). So that made me doubt and reading articles (at least what I found) convinced me even more that this Widget is part of the Studio package (which makes no sense, if you already have your full Multiterm package installed, kind of redundant). So I´m already sending another request to our IT people to check this out.

Is the termbase saved on your local drive, or in MultiTerm Server (the application and not just a termbase you placed on a network drive to share).

The first step was just to send my colleage the Multiterm file (I prepared a small one, just for testing), and see how it works. BUT (and this same problem happens to me, and I am a license Studio user), widget just doesn´t find some words (I think I should start another thread about  that, following your previous advice).

So the first stage was just testing it locally. And the general idea is, yes, to have the dictionary at some shared location, so that anyone with the Widget installed could have access to it. There will be problem with simultaneous access, you mean?....

  • Dear  ,

I am still trying to find out the reason of why the Widget bar does not read some terms from our TDB...Could you, please, have a look? (I´ve imported several excel files and then I did some filtering/checking/merging manually. Maybe the Widget cannot read merged entries?

    Thanks, Paul!

PS: well, this video is addressed to anyone willing to help!!!:)

  • Hi ,

Could you do the same test having MultiTerm closed?

The fact is that a MultiTerm glossary is actually an Access database that it’s not intended to be opened more than once. Note that opening a glossary twice (MultiTerm and the widget) may work sometimes or not.

  • The bar was tested by another user with no MultiTerm application installed,an the result is the same. BUT: the terms that cause the application closure in his case are different.

Anyway, just to be on the safe side, I have just closed the MultiTerm app and searched for the words from the video, and the error is there....

  • Jesús, I have also tried the Tb-Scout (The MultiTerm Explorer), but it doesn´t show the images/comments, if any, is quite uncomfortable and has no shortcut keys.... any other option? I feel like I should open a new thread to draw more attention to the issue......

  • Would like to post another comment on the TB-Scout plugin I have recently downloaded and tested. There is a good video from the developers on Youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrSaJAyzsyc ) with detailed explanations of all the uses and types of searches this app allows. It DOES allow to view images and search through the comments and other fields that an Access database may contain, as well as to export specific entries in loads of ways.

However, for the users of our company that would be too complicated. The Widget bar concept is perfect for the BASIC use and type of search we need, while TB-Scout is designed for the advanced-level ones.

  • Hi  ,

Please confirm you still have those error without using OneDrive, Dropbox and so on, and that the MultiTerm glossary has been reorganized.

  • Dear  ,

unfortunately the reorganization of the TDB has not helped, the Widget bar still crashes (VERY OFTEN) when searching specific terms and I cannot deduce what entries are the ones it cannot read (for example, some merged entries give no error, others do; the same with the new entries created from zero....).

So I decided to try the new Widget bar version (2022) with my Multiterm 2021. Unfortunately, the only difference is that it crashes with different entries, so still without solution....

More ideas, suggestions....???? The issue is still open!

If you still have issues, I’m really running out of ideas, so please tag Paul Filkin, he may help you or escalate to developers.
