how to recover multiterm 2007 after change of PC

Hello,

I bought some weeks ago a new PC and installed on it Trados Studio (which I did not own before) as well as Trados 8.0 (which I deactivated on my old PC in order to activate it on the new PC).

So far, so good.

Both Trados versions work fine.

It was only today that I noticed that I do no longer have Multiterm for Trados 8.0. To be honest, I don't even rembember if Multiterm is automatically installed togehter with Trados 8.0 or if it requires a separate installation. Anyway, I do not longer have my old PC. And on my SDL account, I only see the licence for Trados but not for Multiterm. So how can I recover my good old Multiterm?

Hi Lucia,

If you have installed Studio then you must work with the latest version of Multiterm too and not the old version you have there. So you need MultiTerm 12. You may have a lot of problems if you use Multiterm 8 as the changes between these versions are significant.

If you look in the downloads section of your account (I'm looking in your account right now) you'll see this is available:

SDL MultiTerm 2015 SR-2 Desktop Installer

Download and install this version and then you're good to go.

Many thanks for your quick reply.

I do in fact use in general the new Multiterm version and I have this week downloaded the SDL MultiTerm 2015 DR-2 Desktop Installer, as you suggest. However, my problem is the following:

A client asked me today to do a project for him and he wants me to do it in the old Trados version so that I can deliver a bilingual doc-file to him. And he wants me to use Multiterm.

So can I use the new Multiterm of Trados 2015 with Trados 2007???

Hi Luçia,

No you can't. But you can handle the bilingual doc files in Studio if you like? All you need to do is convert the source file to a Bilingual DOC file first and then translate the Bilingual DOC file in Studio. The final target file will be a Bilingual DOC.

You can use Workbench to create a fully segmented Bilingual DOC, or use SDL Legit! which is a free OpenExchange application that makes this simple. This article might be useful for you:

Dear Paul,

Thank you very much!!! I did not know it was possible to deliver bilingual doc-files when working with Trados Studio. You are really kind of a saviour and I am sure lots of Trados users having trouble feel the same. Thank you!!! (By the way, I have registered for a three hour's training session on Trados 2015 for next week, so I hope I'll learn a lot there ;-))

For today's project it is too late now. However, I will certainly try out to create bilingual doc-fils in Trados Studio so I know for next time.

It did not work with Firefox, but it worked fine with Microsoft Edge.

It's strange. I have always worked with Firefox and never had any problems. However, on my new PC, I now have frequently problems with Firefox when I want to upload/download files. So I think that it is not Firefox in itself which causes trouble but rather the settings of my PC (unfortunately I have not yet found out which settings I could change)...

Dear Paul,

I hope that you are fine. I am still stuck on my problem.

The situation is the following:
The client sends me a WORD docx-file, a Multiterm mdb-file, and a TM tmx-file.
He wants me to deliver a bilingual file.
(In the past, I simply used my Trados 2007 and Multiterm 2007 and there was no problem. As I lost Multiterm 2007 because I installed Trados Studio, I can no longer proceed as in the past.)

What I tried so far:
1) Following your advice, I tried do convert the monolingual file into a bilingual file using SDL Legit.
This works fine with doc-files, but not with docx-files. (why? I have Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2016 on my PC)
So far so good. I simply converted the doxc-file into a doc-file and then created a bilingual file with SDL Legit.

2) I then tried to open the bilingual file in Trados Studio. This gives me the following error message:
"Le pack de compatibilité Microsoft Office doit être installé pour traiter ce format de fichier" (The compatibility package Microsoft Office must be installed to work with this type of file)

Do you have any ideas what I can do? Why should I download a compatibility package (and for which version??) as I have the newest Microsoft Office anyway. So I guess I have to succeed in using the docx-file in LegIt, but so far I only succeeded in creating a bilingual file with the doc-format and not the docx-format. What can be the reason for this, please?

Hi Lucia,

I guess part of your problem is that Workbench would not convert a DOCX to Bilingual DOC either, it would convert to a TTX. Perhaps you should be using this workflow? I think it's really crazy that a company working with the newer DOCX formats would want to have a Bilingual DOC.

They asked you for a bilingual file. This means, most likely, it could be Bilingual DOC, TTX or SDLXLIFF if the files comes from SDL Trados. The fact it was a DOCX means you can probably rule out Bilingual DOC, so I'd ask your client what format they are looking for?

There is another option that might work if they actually ask you for a Bilingual DOCX. Some clients seem happy with this approach. There is another tool available that allows you to just translate the DOCX as a DOCX and then convert it to either a bilingual DOC, DOCX, TTX or TMX from the SDLXLIFF you have in Studio:

Thank you for proposing the tool SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter. The description says: "The file you get [...] will be nothing more than text. " So, if I understand correctly, all the formatting would be gone which is not an option for my client.
Honestly, so far the only solution I can see would be to have two PCs - one with Trados Studio and one with Trados 2007 and Multiterm 2007. However, this is hardly an option...
