Importing an xml file into a new termbase

I have been sent an XML file that I would like to import into a new termbase. I have created the termbase and imported the xml file but when it starts to import it says there are 0 entries. Any ideas?

  • Did it come from a termbase with the same termbase definition? Or did you create a new termbase just for this xml file? If the latter did you get a definition file too?

Have you tried to do this using the Glossary Converter which will make an assumption about the definition to suit the XML you feed it?

    Regards

  • I created a new termbase for this file. I think it was an export from Acrolinx. I did not get a definition file - what is that?! I opened glossary converter but then thought it doesn't support xml, so what exactly would I use the glossary converter for, and what steps would I take? I'm assuming that it won't import due to the field definitions?
  • Hi Karen,

If you want to import a multiterm xml file into a new termbase the first thing you have to do is make sure that the termbase has been built to match the contents of the xml. Multiterm termbases can look like anything you can possibly imagine! So you would create the termbase using the definition file and then once you had done that you import the xml.

The Glossary Converter can scan the xml file and make an assumption about the definition, so it provides a means to create the termbase even if you don't have a definition file available. Just drag and drop the xml file into the converter and make sure you have it set to output a termbase.

  • Hi Paul, thanks for your answers. Unfortunately I get an error message using the glossary converter. I think I'll go back to the creator of the xml and ask for the definition file or an excel file!
  • Hi Karen,

Can I see the file? It would be interesting to see where the problem is as Acrolinx are a partner of ours. If you can share it you can email me at pfilkin@sdl.com
