PC - laptop sync with sdl 2015 Best Practices?

Dear All,

I am looking for the best way to sync PC and Laptop for sdl 2015.

I have the software installed on my c harddrive and the translated and to-be-translated files on D, and I also  have a back-up of my TMs and termbases (that are on c) on d (which also has a c and d drive).

What would be the easiest, most efficient and logical way to sync this with my Laptop?

Thanks for your input, Carola

  • Put all your files (including TBs and TMs) on D:\
Create an extra folder for translation memories, sort them by language pair, then by customer. Also create an extra folder for termbases.
Create a folder system for your translations.
Then go to another computer and create EXACTLY the same folder structure. Copy all files from one PC to another.
Download AllwaySync (https://allwaysync.com/), create a synchronization job for the drive D:\ and this was it then.
When you keep exactly the same file and folder structure in both PCs, no problems will occur. This is because Studio uses absolute paths, ie if the TM in PC 1 is stored in d:\tm\language 1 - language 2\customer and in PC also in d:\tm\language 1 - language 2\customer, then it simply finds it and works like nothing would have changed. If your project in PC 1 is stored in d:\projects\customer\job number and in another PC in f:\projects\customer\job number, so this will work either, as Studio looks for project files under ...\projects\customer\job number and for TMs under d:\tm\language 1 - language 2\customer

  • Hi Jerzy,

Just about to try it out:

    What "All" files?

Do you refer to all the files that are in the

    \user\username\documents\studio2015 subfolders?

This would include autosave, language ressource templates, project templates, projects, termbases, terminjector, translation memories, upgrade translation memories. Would I then delete the path in c?

Thank you so much for your assistance, Best, Carola
  • I use TO3000 too. So in that case just create exactly the same structure for TO3000 in another PC. You can even have the TO3000 database synchronized between both PCs via Dropbox & co.
As for the \user\username\documents\studio2015 subfolders path - I do not actively store any files there, so only Project templates and similar are there. Therefore I backup this folder on NAS on regular basis.
All other files - like TMs or translatable files - are NOT stored on C:\ - I store them:
    - TMs/TBs locally on a SSD
    - all other translatable files including projects on a NAS

  • Thanks Jerzy, Followed your instructions and things seem to work. Although I have been involved. It is now much clearer to me where trados files actually are (and why). Best, Carola
