Background layout error with SDL Trados 2017

Dear All,

I am using SDL Trados 2017 to work on an .idml file from English to Chinese.

When I opened the file, it showed numerous lines of "Unknown exception when generating layout for segment xxxxx (internal row xxxxx)".

As I translated more, the error segments stacked up.

In addition, some segments went blank and uneditable after I translated and confirmed it.

It seemed these "disappeared" segments are exactly the ones with layout error messages.

I've tried the solution suggested by SDL tech support (http://producthelp.sdl.com/kb/Articles/3421.html) with no success.

I've also uninstalled additional Chinese input method that might interfere with SDL Trados and used only the default IME by Windows.

Still the error messages persisted.

My system:

Win 7 Pro, 8G RAM

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

(Yes, I realized the file might be too big, and I have asked the client to provide smaller files. Yet I don't think smaller files would help to eliminate the error messages.)

  • Hi Tse-fen,

Can I see your source file so we can rule out this being the problem? If I can please send it to pfilkin@sdl.com

    Thanks

  • Problem solved (sort of) for the time being.

In addition to the background layout format error, I also encountered "Attempted to read or write protected memory" errors.
    Tried solution suggested, no luck.

The client is unable to split the file as it would break all the links (it's a book).

Since I also had the pdf of the same file, I splitted the pdf into smaller files, then converted them into MS word format (with Adobe Acrobat).
Unfortunately, these word files and SDL Trados 2017 still did not go well hand in hand. Error messages persisted.

I had to resort to SDL Trados 2009, and it seemed worked pretty well, at least for now.
The catch is I have to remove the cf tags first, save the files as rtf or older versions.
Still a bit of cf tags remained, but I got to work on most of the content without being interrupted by the annoying error messages and got a decent TM.

Still waiting for the SDL support to assist me with the existing error issues, though.

  • Hi Tse-fen,

Thank you for sending me the files to check. I don't have any problems with either the DOCX or the IDML and am able to open, translate and save target for them both.

However, looking at your errors I think this is probably related to your AntiVirus taking exception with Studio. Please can you review the following SDL KB article:

    gateway.sdl.com/communityknowledge

And perhaps also this very useful article created by explaining how to configure an AntiVirus to avoid this problem:

  • Hi, Paul,

Thanks for your advice. Too bad I am not using AVG. It is a new computer packed with a trail version of McAfee, and I haven't found the relevant setting to give it a try.

Checked your pseudo translated files. I noticed it is in simplified Chinese, and no characters in question was used. It seemed the issues might have to do with certain traditional Chinese characters. For example, when I tried to type the Chinese character for "pancreas", the "protected memory" error just popped, then the segment became inaccessible right after or after I saved and reopened the file.

Would like to disable or uninstall my McAfee and see how it goes later, but now I will stick to 2009 so I can finish my work ASAP. Have spent enough time got bombarded by the error messages and don't want to waste a second on that now. Worked with 2009 yesterday, not a single "protected memory" or "layout" errors emerged.

    Your assistance is appreciated.
  • Hi Tse-fen,

I think checking by disabling it is a good idea for now and then you'll at least know if this is the source of your problem.  I only gave you the AVG link as an example as we have seen this, from time to time, with other flavours of AV too.

Interesting your comment on the characters I produced using pseudo translate as I did use Traditional Chinese... but unfortunately I am unable to tell the difference unless I saw them both together.  Seems we don't use Traditional Chinese for this.  However, I'm not sure this will make a difference but perhaps you could send me the right characters to use and I can test this correctly, and also maybe try turning off the wysiwyg in your editor?

  • Hi, Paul,

Just uninstalled McAfee, and tried the idml file with 2017 again. Simply dropped the untranslated source file into 2017 to start anew. Issues persisted. Got numerous lines of "layout" messages. Inaccessible segments still existed.

Please note I have been using exactly the formatting display style suggested before I first posted my question.

I'll send you my TM and you could use it with the file. Maybe it would be easier to see what went wrong, or at least got a chance to experience what I encountered.

Thanks for your efforts to make it work.
